Title: Track width ov a stock Pinto...??? OR...
Post by: Pale Roader on December 02, 2009, 08:26:45 AM

Even better would be if anyone knew how much wider a 94-up (SN95) Mustang rearend is than a Pinto 8"...??.?

My Pinto needs a posi. It also needs better gears. It also needs better rear suspension (stiffer leafs and shocks). It also needs rear discs. Well... that last one would be nice. So i figured, why spend time looking for a bunch ov rare shite, spend a pile ov money on the same and still end up with less? I'm just gonna swap a (likely 96-98) Cobra diff, that will already have a 3.27 posi, or possibly better if its been modified, and end up with 11.65" rear discs as a bonus. With the diff out upgrading the leafs will be easy. I've already got a guy who will modify the attaching points/perches, etc, thats easy enough.

I just need to know if it will be much wider. If it was 3" wider PER SIDE... that would be absolutely PERFECT. But i doubt that it is. I dont like the weight difference... but i figure the benefits outweigh the negatives.

I don't know what you are paying for that rear unit but I have a 8inch from a Mustang II in mine that I am adding a posi unit [about $400] and a 4:10 gears [came with car].  You can add wilwood brakes to the rear for discs. Also you make the move to 5 lug axles it you need it at the same time.

The only reason i mention this is that it will bolt in.  There might be some serious mods to get the other rear in the car.

Not casting any doubts about your swap idea just passing along another way to do it.

Well, thats the whole idea... I already have an 8". But a posi, gears, axles and Wilwoods...??? If i had that kind ov cash i'd be building my 70 Challenger instead. I wont pay more than $500 for the whole rear, and thats got all ov the above. The guy will install it for a couple hundred (or less), its a quick job for him and he knows the 8.8 very well. While its out i'll have the leafs modified for a few bucks and slap it all back together. I bet i get the lot done and driving for less than those Wilwoods would cost.

The only downside is that i'll have to toss my current 17's set up and buy some different 5-bolt rims. The costs will more or less even out after i sell my rims and tires, but i like the look ov what i have now and they're lighter than the aftermarket Mustang stuff i'll have to replace 'em with.

So the tread width is not an issue????  Are you going to use offset wheels to make it fit or???? Now i am interested in how they do it so please take some pictures.  Good luck.

the 8.8 is 60-1/2" axle to axle

Its not an issue for me, as i'm buying new rims for it anyways. I had planned to have my 7.5" rims widened actually, but they are 4-bolt and i wanna go 5-bolt. I'm assuming it will be wider than a Pinto rear, so the 3" per side i'm missing will likely be less. There are lots ov aftermarket Mustang rims from 8" to 11" with anything from deep offsets to deep dish... so my choices in the rim depth are numerous.

I was thinking about putting an 8.8" under my Challenger as well (well, long before i thought ov the Pinto) and its gonna be pretty much the same deal. He's gonna whack all the stock mounting points off the diff, put it on a special jig he's got for narrowing rearends and weld leaf-perches on where they need to be located. The rest is gravy. I'll also have to use a drum/drum master booster too, as my Pinto has front discs.

Pintoracer, thanks. Happen to know what the 8" Pinto rear is?

Not 100% on the actual Pinto 8" but mine is 58" and it came from a '68 Mustang and it was a bolt-in as far as the location of the perches.

Well, finally got off my @ss and looked it up. Yours is definitely wider than a Pinto. I get 55.6" in most queries, but thats with the 1970 rearend in a base model... not likely an 8". Now, i wonder if the Pinto 8" is wider than the smaller Pinto diff....

I also got 58.7" for the 98 Cobra 8.8", if anyone cares.

Thinking out loud, thats 1.5" per side wider... which is about half what i'd need to make a stock offset Mustang rim work and look right. With the wider sizes and deep-dish options now, there probably a very good chance i'll find a perfect fit in a 10" or 10.5" rim.

Hmmmm...
