I'm trying to figure out what year the donor car was for this Model A so I can purchase parts. it not only has the engine/auto trans, but the compleat front and rear suspension, stearing column, etc. I know it's a 2.0 engine, so that makes it 71-73.. right? are the brake components the same for all pre-74 cars? they require a lot of pedal presure. any advise as far as brake upgrades?
Thanks,

2.0 was last in the ford pinto in 1974 as the base engine. youd have better luck finding stuff for the 74-80 pinto/mustang ii brakes and suspension. i know 71-3 were different but i dont know whats different.

71 is different from 72 and 73 they have smaller steering ball joint meaning the taper hole in spindle is smaller. You want 74 on up disc. Fred :) and yea I have those

first I need to find out what I have
now.
So if 71 BJ hole is smaller than 72-73.... then is the 72-73 spindle hole the same as 74? and what would be gained by using the 74 & up disc? I'll eventually be swapping to 8" rear, so later rear brakes will happen with that swap anyway.
This is what I have now. can you tell from this what I have?
thanks,

that looks like my 74 set up. but id wait til someone with more skill with the early models chimes in. the advantage to 74-80 set ups is that ANY aftermarket mustang ii stuff will work. anything from big brakes to dropped spindles.

Hey there,
Sorry but you have 71,73 stuff there. All of its specific to those years. cept wheel bearings. LOL. Nothing will interchange with the 74 up stuff.
However if you want brakes the Wilwood stuff will mount up. If you look at their web site all of there pinto listings state 71-80. But your stuck with ball joints, bushings and bolt up sway bar stuff for 71-73. To change would be major. I cant tell from the pic but if the preivious owner swapped in the whole crossmember from 71-73 car then youd need to start with a 74 up crossmember. Then you could start getting all the nice suspension stuff for the 74 and up crowd.
Why Ford did this ill never know. But they changed almost every dimension just a little bit yet kept the same basic design. The spindles a lot taller, with bigger holes, has bigger bushings (just a little), and the size is just a little bigger. Oh and the lower ball joint is also specific. The spacing between the holes is different by i think 3/8". So the 74 up sway bar stuff that bolts to the strut rods has to be modified. Ask me how i found out that! LOL
Anyways, good luck!

Great info to have 71hotrodpinto. thank you! the car does have the early Pinto crossmember as well, so it sounds like except for new pads etc, I'll stick with the basic setup I have there for a wile.
