Title: 86 turbo 2.3 engine question
Post by: sabray1 on November 19, 2004, 02:22:07 PM
Ok I'm kinda new to ford turbo 2.3's.    I built a sandrail and used a 86 2.3 turbo thunderbird as my doner rig. I wired up the engine as the EFI WIRING Diagram at (  http://www.blindchickenracing.com/How_to/T-bird_install/2_3_ford_install.htm  ) shows.

I read the timing is to be set at 10BTDC, it is set at 10BTDC at idle, and when you rev up the engine the the timing dosn't advance it retardes to as musch as 20ATDC.  Not sure what is wrong here but I would think it would advance the timing.  Can anyone see what might be wrong with the wiring diagram.

The only way I can get it to run properly is to set the timing at close to 30BTDC, has good power there but is a pain to start.

I'm at a loss as to what is set wrong.

Cam timing is correct, checked it several times.

Why would the ignition timing retard instead of advancing?  This is what puzzles me.  Every motor I have worked on advances the ignition timing as you rev the motor up.

Did you disconnect the PIP at the distributor. If you didn't it might be giving a false reading.

Did that when I set the timing.

Did you use a different computer for the harness that you have? If so, it may have to be repinned. Just throwing out an idea, I maybe way off.

Did you set timing with the SPOUT unplugged?

You must remove the spout plug located in the harness that is connected to the distributer before setting the timing. If it is disconected then the timing will stay at one setting only no matter what position the throttle is in or the engine rpm. Once set at 10 degress then plug it back in.

Ignition timing will retard when the throttle is cracked to prevent detonation, full advance no load, retard under load.

Lastly, the 2.3 used a couple of different timing mark locations on the pulley. Did you swap an older pulley and use a newer timing bely cover? If thats so then you also need to go back and recheck your cam timing after straightening out where T.D.C  is.

I did not change any items on the motor. Now the previous owner may have changed items around. It is running v-belt pully's and I would have to guess that is what came on it from the factory.

I did unplug a single wire connector coming from the distributer (guessing that is the spout) and set timing to 10 degrees. from there is goes up to mybe 15 degress the retards to where to motor will not rev up any more no mater where you move the thottle to.  This is just setting in the driveway with no load.

How would the computer know if it has a load on it or not?
Does anyone have a complete pinout list for the ECM and what each pin is for?

There are several wires coming out of the ECM that are not connected to anything.

Sabray1, were you able to get on the  Turboford.org site yet? I'm sure there are a bunch of archive topics on this subject.

I still can't get on the Turboford.org site yet. :(   But I think I might have found at least one error in the wiring. Pin out of the ECM show pin 37 as vehicle power and was not connected.  I cant start it yet to verify. Engine is sitting on the shop floor waiting for the new long travel frame to be completed at the builders shop.
Will be mid Dec before it is ready for me to pick up.

I can now get on the turbo ford site.  Bought a ranger roller cam, new lifters and roller rockers. While trying to install the new cam I bent one of the valve's with the tool used to compress the valve spring.  :(   So this required that I pull the head to repair. Sense I had to pull the head anyway, I decided to check out the entire engine. Found the the head needs rebuilt badly (oil in the intake manifold), and found the main and rod bearing to be wore down into the copper. Just my luck.....   So all the parts that needed checked/machined is now down at the machine shop.  With any luck, I'll be putting this motor back together next weekend.  On the bright side, at least the motor will be new.... ;D
