Title: Another tranny ?.
Post by: pintogirl on October 19, 2009, 06:23:59 PM
Ok, here it goes! LOL  I have a 2.9 V6 with a tranny that has the starter on it's driver side. I will not be able to install this set up in my wagon do to the starter hitting the steering!

My question is, can one take a transmission that has a starter on the passenger side, and put it on an engine that originally had a tranny with starter on the driver side? I'm I getting over my head or what? LOL Course, if it is possible, then I need to figure out what tranny will fit on the 2.9. LOL

You should be able to use the C3 trans on that Motor (im not 100% Sure) but you might be able to do that. Im hoping someone with more knowledge on the subject will pipe in here and help you out kim.

Thanks Chad. Also thanks for using the actual name of the tranny. I will know what to ask for if I want to go buy one instead of waiting for something to come along! Hubby knows a guy with a tranny rebuild shop so I can get a tranny pretty cheap. I got my 1600 tranny (don't know what C it is, LOL) for free, so can't beat that! LOL He just doesn't know what will mount to what per say. He just rebuilds them doesn't install them!  ;D

I will see what others have to say, and go from there! Would be nice to be able to use the 2.9 motor I have instead of having to wait for another Ranger to get towed into the yard! LOL

Kim,
If you are going to fit a 4 speed " Rocket Box" to the 1600, you have some options. Go to Burtonpower.com for English Fords and the most detailed Engine and transmission reference that I've ever seen. (see Type E)Then you'll see that the 2000cc trans for Pintos was fitted to some 1600 fords also (English Escort ,Cortina, and even some data for V6 Capri. Of course, if you want to lay down  $3k for a indestructable trans , go to Quaifeamerica.com, and you'll see my "Street of Dreams" :surprised: ;D

Kim ,
Sorry, I was really thinking about the other Thread with the query about 1600 & 2000 trans applications. I take it you have plans for a pre 75 2.9 v6 / auto, and the starter is an issue?
The 2.9 is the same block as the 2.8 & 3.0L Capri engine, so if you follow the logic of the Mustang II sold with the 2.8L V6 and Auto ( I used to have a M2 Cobra II) you should have little problem coming up with the "right " bits from salvage.
I continually beat myself up for not having bought a Miata to Race, and I've driven really modded Miatas, BUT I'm just not Rich enough to own a 84 GTI and a Pinto racer & a 01 Dodge Dakota Pickup, and still stay happily married ;D
When the real Job Market resumes, I'll overdose on Miata too ::)

We should meet up at your next Media Event, I'll offer hours of irrelevant banter on cars, politics, and alien abduction theories. Bring Becky and friends and a few other pinto nuts.

Keep us posted as you always do...
