Ok guy's,
As you all know I have had a terrible time with windshield gaskets on both my Pintos. I have bought them from Autokrafters and they both leak. I have tried three different ways of installing the shield in the car. 1. no sealent at all, just the gasket. Leaked. 2. Silicone and gasket, leaked. 3. Pinchweld tape and gasket, leaked. The only way we got one of the shields to stop leaking was to run a bead of black goop (stuff for the newer non gasket type shields) around the gasket. That is obviously not the way to do it as now water won't flow as well and could eventually cause a rust problem. We won't think about that now though! LOL
So I have a question for all of you that have R&R'd your windshields. Where did you buy your gasket? Did it leak? Also, how did you install it? Did you use silicone or just put the gasket on with no other substance?
I have one more sheild to do and I want to do it right, the first time!!!!
Thanks for any info!!
Kim
dennis carpenter now has them for 75 + shipping. i think shipping is about 10 bucks.
Kim, what about the add on the home page from Steel Rubber?
Kim,
I forgot where I got mine, have to look it up. Have a windshield guy do the job. they have the tools. When I did my headliner, I had a windshield guy take out the windshield for me and come back and install it after i had the headliner in. pretty cheap too.

I noticed on the post on her green car she had nothing but problems with Autokrafters gaskets leaking. Hope she can find a good company to go through so I can find one that won't leak.
Hello:
The windshield gasket must be sealed. Generally,
the sealer is a type of rubber butyl cement which
never gets hard but stays tacky so water cannot
get through.
I have had no problems with the Autokrafters gasket leaking.
However, I used a black butyl rubber cord which I got from
AMK. Here is the link:

And that goes on the windshield before the rubber gasket? Or is it on the car itself?
Hey r4pinto:
I put the BRB cord in the gasket groove first
and then attached the gasket to the windshield.
The windshield and gasket was then installed.
Then I put RBR cord under the gasket all around
the outside edges between it and the metal car
edges.
The BRB is easier to work with on a warm summer
day. If you are working with it now you could
use a hair drier to warm it up.

So I am guessing that it is not to late to add the RBR cord, even though I already have the windshield installed? I realize I can't put the BRB cord between the glass and rubber, but it would probably help if I could do the inbetween rubber and metal of car!!
For now I will just have to tarp the car when it rains! LOL
At least I know what to buy for Shaggy. Thanks for the link!!! ;D
I tell ya, I remember using that stuff on the rear window of the 78 hatchback I used to own and that sucker never did leak... And that was with a 20 something year old seal. All gummy, but it worked.
77pintocw, how much of the cord did you have to use? Is the 15 feet that it comes with enough to do both the glass groove and the outside metal to gasket groove, or should we be ordering two rolls of it?
I am getting ready to order the gasket and all the necessary stuff I will need for redoing my 78's windshield in the next few weeks. I just want to make sure I will have everything I need.
In the gas station mens room?!?!
I think you can get them on ebay.
Hey dave1987:
I used two rolls since I wanted to make sure I had enough
to cover all the necessary lengths plus the stuff wasn't that
expensive per roll anyway.
Good luck!

PS: I get mine at Wal-Mart

I purchased some bushings for the clutch pedal while I was on there.
So you used the BRB cord in both the glass and the body grooves?
