I found a 1997 Ford Ranger truck with the 2.3 and automatic-has 75,000 miles on the engine and transmission--guy wants 500.00 for the truck--QUESTION CAN I INSTALL THE ENGINE AND TRANNY IN MY 1977 PINTO AND IF SO JUST WHAT WILL I NEED FROM THE DONOR TRUCK OTHER THAN ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION..
THANKS IN ADVANCE
Lefty
from the ranger youd need: 2300 engine, 4r44e tranny (computer controlled), engine control module, engine/tranny harness and drive shaft yoke.
what else youd need: high pressure/volume fuel pump, a way for the ecm to read the speed of the vehicle for shift points (thats IF the vss is on the rear axle, which im pretty sure it is on those rangers), IF the vss is on the tranny (which, like i just stated, i dont think it is) youll need to find an alternative way to read your speed from inside the car ,a wiring diagram for your pinto and the ranger for wire splices, and your drive shaft modified. im pretty sure that tranny is longer.
id still keep that ranger around until i had the pinto running good. its easy to overlook stuff.
as far as your "can i install this" question, the answer is yes. it just depends on how much work, patience and smarts your willing to put into it. this is a very simaler swap id like to do...but with a 2.5. i think it would be a great cruiser.
