My engine is a 2.3 and I believe a 1974 (It has a points distributor). I pulled the intake manifold and noticed that the ports on the head were a D shape but the ports on the manifold were O shaped. What do I have?
It sounds like some one mixed the parts some time in the past. It may be a 80's engine and/or head with a 70's intake. I believe you are right that a 2.3 points type distributor is from a 74, but there are always exceptions. The link below has a approximate history of the 2.3 head variations along with casting numbers. Click on the "Back 2 Basics Sheet" at the top center of the page.

This thread mainly talks about block thickness but down the page some there is a description of block casting numbers.
