Title: Dream Pinto
Post by: 78squirewagon on September 08, 2009, 08:46:14 PM
Ok, I got to thinking how cool it would be to be able to go back in time and order my very own Pinto with the options that were available at the time. No V-8's and special order stuff. Maybe being able to mix and match from the coupes to the wagons but using factory available options.

It would have to be a 1978 Squire wagon, red in color, V-6, Four Speed, PS, PB, A/C, factory sun roof, AM/FM, roof rack, deluxe interior with factory mag wheels and center caps.

Now, let's hear what everyone else would do. Just remember that your "dream" car cannot have things like a V-8 with four wheel disc brakes. it has to be what was available either on the coupes or wagons or both. You can mix and match between the two (sunroof on a wagon, ect)

White '80 CW with Rallye spoiler, 4 speed, AC, and after market auto-reverse stereo with four speakers.

Neat concept.

Kind of hard to choose, so I will be a bit stingy, and pick more than one.

Early model: 71 sedan, 2000, 4spd.  Plain Jane as they come, with radio delete, rubber floor covering, power NOTHING. Color does not really matter, but I suppose I would go white with saddle interior, or whatever the lowest grade was.  Steelies with the dog dishes would be fine, but if there was a wheel cover delete, I'd get that.

Later model: 77/78 Cruising Wagon.  I'd want it black like the F-100s and Broncos I remember that came with the tri-color stripes.  Interior would be red.  It'd be a 2.3 with a 4spd, A/C definitely, and MAYBE P/S, P/B.  Styled steel wheels to round out the package.

My dream Pinto would probably be a red Squire wagon too, equipped just like yours except I'd toss in an 8-track tape player to round out the package.  Would absolutely have to have the nifty plaid interior!  Oh yeah, mine would by a '74.

My 78 currently has an 8-track but from all of the research I have done, you could not get an am/fm/8track for the Pinto's. I tell everyone that mine would have been dealer installed in 78  ;D.

Now let's here some more.

Don't know for sure about Pinto, but it was an option on the Bobcat.  I was selling Lincoln-Mercury products at the time and my mom purchased a 1977 Bobcat Villager wagon from me (red with the plaid seats) and the 8-Track was NOT dealer installed.  Come to think of it, though, I believe it was an AM radio with the 8-Track Tape Player... no FM.  Could be mistaken about that; it's been a long time!  I DO know, however, that the 8-Track was installed at the factory.  It may have been one of those options that wasn't "officially" available but could be had if you had the right connections.  That's how the Diamond Blue Metallic and Silver Metallic Collector's Series Lincolns from 1979 are explained.  According to official information, they were available only in a choice of Midnight Blue Metallic or White.  In 1980 I ordered a Bill Blass Edition Continental Mark VI for a customer with a "deviation" - it had "unavailable" red velour upholstery.  Most things could be had back then, if you only knew who and how to ask.  That may or may not have been the case with Mom's Bobcat - after 32 years, I simply don't remember.  I seriously doubt that auto manufacturers will still cater to customers that way.  If they do, I'd like something other than gray or tan upholstery in my next new car!

Hey dga57:

Good memory, attached is a pic of the 1977 Ford Pinto options.
As you can see one of the options was an AM with Stereo Tape
Player but no AM/FM Stereo Tape.

That's what I thought. But it's fun to tell people that mine was a "dealer option"  ;D   I actually had to prove that it worked last night and people got a real kick out of it

Can I have two? Thanks! lol.

One I would've loved to have had was a '71 (here it comes Kimmy! lol ) Runabout with the half glass hatch, in Grabber Blue (was that an optional color in '71? I know it was in '72.) with automatic transmission, 2.0 motor, black or metallic blue (?) or white interior. Yellow would be good too. (exterior silly!  ;D)
black vinyl-top, pop-out quarter windows,
            OR...

A '72-'74 Squire wagon in Grabber blue, yellow or medium yellow gold with appropriate interior (black or white for the grabber Blue one, yellow or medium yellow gold for the other one) with the inner door panels with kicking filly on them, the grille badge with same filly on it, automatic all the way, a/c, tinted glass, sunroof, am/fm radio, slotted forged aluminum wheels with center caps, (both body styles) light group, bodyside moldings (both).

            Or.......

I've always liked the Sport Accent Group. Any color with the gewgaws mentioned above that apply. Whew!

i think mine would be a 78 cruising wagon, with the ralley wheels, spoiler and removable sunroof. with a V-6 and 4 speed. it would have to be tangerine with the deluxe plaid tangerine interior and ralley gauges in the middle of the dash and air conditioning. but i would remove the tacky decals from the side of it though. for a smoother look.

real close to my dream too.  & real close to what i had. '71 2.0, 4spd.  they didn't have power anything in those days anyway.  mine had the AM radio and the steel wheels with the dog dishes and carpet.
