Hi Folks. I found ,(from what I think I am able to gather from the VIN #), a 92 Mercury Cougar XR 7 EFI Turbo that was, until today, on it's way to China!
I would LOVE to put the power plant and a T-5 / 8" rear in a 71 Sedan.
Trouble is, I don't know jack about turbos!
There are sensors and plumbing EVERYWHERE ! I don't have a clue as to what I need to extract and not destroy anything else important in the process. From what I've heard in other posts there is an electronic brain that runs the whole thing?
The only thing missing is the alternator. The car is a mess but I can get it home and take my time picking at it.
I sure hope that the group may give me some direction and a little 101.

Uh, what you have there is a 3.8 V6 with a supercharger. I dont know Jack about how to do that swap. But, you may be able to do it ( however) I doubt you will have many people on this site able to help out.............. :-X
I have since found ,( from www.foxthundercats.com/vin.htm ) , that the car in question is # 62701 to come off the assembly line in Lorain Ohio during 1985. The 92 that I mentioned before is a model code indicating all Cougar models from 82 to 86, according to their decoder.
It is a 2300 underneath all of the birds nest.
Do you think that this would be worth all of the effort? Everything I've read from the turbo crowd would seem to indicate that got quite a find. :'(
Do the swap! I would love to do that, i wanted to do it to my fatherinlaws '78 The 3.8 can be done up quit nice, over 400hp if money permits. I may be able to help with the wiring, wont be too much different than the 5 liter wiring.
The VIN # of the vehicle, (IMEBP92W5FH62701), indicates that it is an 85 Cougar, according to the site I indicated before. The front sway bar looks as though it could hold up the Brooklyn Bridge. It's massive!
Just looking at the number 92 made me think that it was a 92. Not so.
Soooooooooooooo, what do you think folks, do I have a keeper ? ?
I have heard of retro fitted Pintos refered to as "Corvette Catchers".
Is this hog wash? I understand that the set up is not made for smokin' tires but for ultimate speed.
I'm 53 and I won't take my Pinto much over seventy. I just like the G - Force pull, with all of the bells and whistles & gauge packs that go with the turbo kit.
Please - Am I chasing smoke here? , or would this be a worthwhile down the roader?
The China people are not that impressed one way or another and if I don't do something with it, it's going on the boat a lot smaller than it is now! ???

yes keep it. The little turbo 4's go like snot when done up properly......you are going to put it in the pinto aren't you? Pull the engine and tranny, the wiring loom to the engine and computer, keep all the sensors on the loom.
The 2300 can be "force fed" to a 10sec timeslip so YEA keep the turbo setup. Glassman may be willing to help with the swap he's just completed it. Also SVOwagon has one, as well as 3-4 others on this site.
By all means, do it. Like 78pinto wrote, get as much stuff from the Cougar that you can. The more, the better. You can alway throw away what you don't need, but once the car has been taken away, you can't get the things that your missing. My Pinto right now is faster then my stock 5.0 91 Mustang lx and it's only going to get faster! ;D
See web site.
