Title: transmission speedometer seal leaks
Post by: JVT on August 28, 2009, 08:22:03 PM
New guy with an oil leak. OK,this is the deal. I have  a pinto transmission  I think in a snow cat. The speedometer is not used  and it is leaking out of the spedometer cable connection on the transmission  and  the oil  has rotted out most of the transmission mount below it. Is it hard to get the parts? will napa have them?
Thanks,Jim

Some parts you can find, some you can't! If NAPA doesn't carry what you need, PM Fred Morgan, he has most anything you may need. What do you have the speedo hole plugged with? On my race cars I used a freeze plug.

That is the german built 4 speed Pinto trans. The fluid is coming out of whats left of the speedo cable. You could put silicone there to fill up the hole, there should be a metal clip there to hold it in. Looks like the bolt hole has been filled in. (upper left of your second pic) I would just tap a freeze plug in there and be done with it.

I like the freeze plug suggestion. But the speedo shaft sticks out some and would prevent it. How does this remove?
On the transmission,do you know  a model or how I can find it. I see no tag on it.
thanks jim

grab that little shaft with a pair of vise-grips and pull, the whole thing should pop out. Without a tag I don't know how to ID the trans, they were all basicly the same, just different first & second gear ratio.

With what looks like a six bolt aluminum top cover, I'd say this is the english version from behind a 1600 kent engine. What is it mated to here? Be sure to put a little sealer around that core plug. JT

I found the tag.It was pressed tight and almost the same color so my old eyes didn't see it.
I don't know what the numbers mean.74BTHA  OB9A 5 The engine is a 1600cc ford industrial. 57hp
What puzzles me is why didn't they plug the hole when it was built in 79. The machine has very low hours 243 and looks original. It is a snow cat and no need for a speedo.

I pryed out on it and it didn't move. The seal isnt available at  ford and napa. ?? Can the front part of this tranny be removed easly? Never had one apart before.  Maybe I can take it in to some shop.

I am still fighting this problem. Unable to find a seal to fix it I may just plug it.
The shaft doesn't want to come out.I put vice grips on it and used a small prybar with slight pressure and nothing moved. If it came out that easy  why didn't  the factory  remove it?
Can you weld on this and not damage anything from the heat? What I am thinking is grind the speedo shaft down and just fill the  hole with aluminum with my welder. Things are going to get hot.even if I have water on it.
This tranny may be hard to find if I damage it.

72 pair is right, that is not the german built trans but the english version. I would fill it with silicone or JB weld.

i was thinking the same thing.  my old brain tells me that the german trans had a formed sheet steel cover and, correct me if i'm wrong, isn't the speedo drive on the german trans on the 'drivers' side of the case?

I am back to working on this and I pulled the seal out and put vice grips on the shaft  . Lots of prying and  it is not moving .Any way I can stop the leak is ok with me. The speedo shaft looks  like it is all metal.
suggestions??
I used a mirror to get a good picture of it after the seal was out.

So I look for english ford parts? The top of my tranny has 4 bolts.

Just to update  everyone on this.
The speedo gear will not pull out on this tranny. So after removing the seal  and cutting the part of the spinning  shaft off (the part that connects to the speedo cable) I then chose a pipe water plug  because it was  hollow in the center and  siliconed it in the hole. It fit over the spinning shaft  that I cut shorter and is about the size of the hole. It is  snug and shows no leakage so far.I haven't run it hot yet but I am hoping the silicone will absorb any temperature changes.
Thanks for your help on this.
