Title: Very impressed with mileage!
Post by: 73pinto on October 20, 2004, 09:53:08 AM
I took my pinto on a 110 mile trip this past weekend.  That probably doesn't sound like much to you guys, but its the furthest its been ran since I've owned it.  Its on a stock 73 2.0.  Anyway, i was very pleased when it returned 32.5 MPG.  Thats pretty good for a 30 year old car, but its gotta make you wonder why mileage hasn't progressed any further in combustion engines...

Anyway, just thought I'd share with ya.

Man, that's about what my 2001 Kia Rio gets. Hopefully my Pinto will get around that once the engine is replaced

I drive my '72 Pinto 55 to 60 miles each day. I can make those 60 miles at 60 mph on $3-worth of gas. Around here, that's a gallon-and-a-half. I'm getting somewhere between 35 and 40 mpg at 60 mph. I thought that sounded high, but it's consistant.

Okay, I did a little more "scientific" research and found that my Pinto gets between 33 and 36 mpg depending on how hard I push it. I drive a 52 mile round trip on an old 2-lane highway that has speed limits of 55 and 60 mph.

$3 worth of gas at $1.89.9 = 1.58 gallons. 52 miles (round trip) / 1.58 = 32.9 mpg.

That's minimum. I don't think I use quite all of the 1.58 gallons.

This is a 1972 wagon with 2.0L engine, 4-speed manual transmission, and 3.55:1 rear-end.

Sure beats the heck out of the 12.5 mpg my F150 with a 302 was getting.

I was down in Temecula a few weeks back for non-pinto stuff. I was amazed that diesel was $2.39 from Seattle, WA to Temecula, CA give or take .05. GASOLINE on the other hand went from $1.8 something all the way up to $2.56.

Currently, gas around here is $1.869/gal.

And, yes, it's the car I got out of the salvage yard for $200.
