I have a 1971 Pinto motor in my sand rail and I have the tranny completly unbolted from the engine block and the frame yet I can only get the tranny to go backwards (away from the engine) about 3/8 of an inch?
The VW tranny is bolted to an adapter plate which was bolted to the block... now with all the bolts out I can only get a little bit of clearance between the block and tranny. Just for giggles I made sure the tranny is not in gear as I can turn the wheels... what else am I missing here?
The image below is from before I unbolted everything;
This may be kinda dumb but maybe you'r starter gear is hanging up on the flywheel ???
