Hey guys how are you all? I'm Will, and I'm from England ( the UK, not the one in America!).
I joined this forum as I need a bit of help off you guys please? I am a Ford sierra and Escort Cosworth owner, and I am interested in the 2.3 Pinto engines ;D.... I need a bit of your knowledge please?
1) How much does a 2.3 pinto block cost second hand, and any ideas what it weighs?
2) What sort of power has been successfully run in a 2.3 engine? Are there turbocharged ones producing anywhere near 500BHP?
I am looking to do a 2.3 or 2.4 version of the Cosworth YB engine, but the 2.0 pinto block that is used is a bit shorter than the USA only 2.3 block, so limits the bore size and stroke.
Any info would be great, thanks for you help!
used 2.3 blocks are worth around 200 us dollars complete
Silly question, but what do you guys call the 2.3 engine? Is it just a 2.3 "pinto" block? And is that $200 with all the crank etc? As I would just need the bare block really ;D
first off... :welcome:
the 2.3 lima (or pinto as you called it) blocks are very easy to find around here. and very cheap. the problem is finding someone that just wants to get rid of a block. i have an extra turbo lima block but its very rusty. im sure ill come across another eventually. im also sure someone on this site has a spare block laying around. the last complete lima i bought was a 2.5 out of a 2001 ranger. it was complete intake to oil pan, harness included. i payed 250 for it. the bare block is pretty light but i dont know a for sure number...around 100 pounds??
there are quite a few 400+ wheel hp 2.3 turbo cars. check www.turboford.net (http://www.turboford.net) and read up a little on there.
ill gladly trade you my lima block for one of your sierras ;D . ill even pay shipping!!!

Thanks for the reply. If you know of anyone selling a 2.3 block cheap, I would love to have it if possible ;D , just got to sort out the small matter of shipping!
Would you happen to have any of the engine specs to hand? Ie standard bore and the crank throw? :D
I think it is a similar block to the 2.0 "pinto" we have over here, and I would be very interested to see if the Cosworth head would fit!
I have what your looking for and it is a turbo block from the Thunderbird. PM me your contact info and I will give you a call or email 8)

Hi Rob, thanks for the offer, I have sent you a PM along with a few questions, appreciate your help on this!
Will,
It's not worth the effort to try to get a Lima 2.3L block to mate up with a Cossie YB Cylinder head. If the bolt patterns, cooling jacket holes and Other Nuances allowed such a Swap ,We would all be trying to get a Esslinger 2.3 Aluminum head to work on our 2.0L EAO pinto blocks. You might be better off Staying Cosworth or going to Duratec 2.3 motors for that big HP number.
The US Lima 2.3 doesn't allow for the Euro EAO 2.0 Pinto/ Cossie interchange without lots of modification.
Sorry, It's all on wikipedia under Ford EAO motors.
Pintosopher
pintosophers right about the head for sure. im sure there may be a way...but not worth it. i think the uk cossies have the old pinto style 2.0 block, but im not for sure.
plenty of power could be had out of an iron lima head. in fact theres a guy on here (at least i think hes still on here) that is running high 5s in the 1/8 with an iron lima headed turbo 2.3. thats gettin it for sure. if you wanted to go the dohc route, you could always do the volvo head swap.
there was a 2.0 that was in rangers. maybe aerostars too??? that motor was pretty much an unbored 2.3 if i remember right.
2.3 rod length, 5.2in
2.3 crank stroke, 3.126
2.3 bore, 3.78

there are some here in the states that are running a turboed 2.0. The Lima 2.3 can and has producted enough power to run a 9 flat in the quarter mile at a weight of about 3200 lbs. They can produce reliably 400hp at the rear wheels with a turbo or a supercharger though most use a turbo.
they are right about the 2.3 cossie head deal, it just won't fit. if you have a cossie 2.0 go ahead and run it as it will make a lot of horsepower. Just so you know the 2.3 short block with forged pistons and rods is basically bullet proof up to about 700hp. Above that you will start to get cap walk which requires either main cap straps or a girdle.
sometimes it is better to run what you have however I have not always followed my own advice.
