Title: Pinto Bellhousing
Post by: stinsonj on July 28, 2009, 01:16:18 PM
I am trying to swap a 1975 2.3L pinto engine into my 1953 willys jeep and am having bell housing issues.  I have an adaptor to bolt up the bellhousing up to my jeep tranny but the main problem im having is with front drive shaft clearance.  The bellhousing im currently trying to use is from a 1979 mustang and it bolts up nicely to both the engine and my adaptor but for whatever reason the housing seems to be rotated towards the passenger side which is in turn creating my clearance issues.  What i was wondering is if different ford bell housings would be rotated differently but retain the same type of bolt pattern. The creater of the adaptor (Novak) thinks that i need an actual pinto bellhousing not a mustang bell housing but they didnt specify if there were any changes through out the years of the pinto.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Most bellhousings follow the curve of the flywheel and the bolt pattern of the block they are bolted to.  I assume since you state a driveshaft issue that the problem is in the lower half of the housing.

How tight is it?  Is it a mounting boss that is hitting? Do you have aftermarket, thicker driveshafts.  Is your front differential in the same location as stock?

A picture of the contact and a notation of the ride height would be helpful.  Either way someone might make a recomondation, or identify the housing you are using and make a comparision.
