Title: Please Help! Need Pinto Smog Info ASAP!
Post by: beicholz on July 18, 2009, 11:08:19 AM
Well, I finally found the Pinto of my dreams.   Unfortunately, I live in CA and can't figure out if it will pass CA smog rules.

I read on the DMV site that there are "49 State" and "50 State" cars.   Only the 50 State cars will pass CA regulations.   Unfortunately, this Pinto's sticker doesn't say one way or the other.

Can anyone help me?

Here's some more detail:
1978
15,000 miles (yes, only 15K!)
Emissions sticker says it passes all requirements for 1978 model year.   In has this code:  D8EE-9C485-BF A-213
Catalytic Converter
Evaporater B-1

Thanks very much!

Congratulations Bob! I know you were searching for "The One"!

As far as I know, as long as she doesn't smoke or leak and she runs well, she should pass. Ithink the smog test computers and machine take into account the year, make, model, engine, etc. so they can't expect a '78 (non smoking) to be as efficient as an engine from today. I know nothing of "49 State" as opposed to "50 State" cars. I'm assuming "50 State" cars are cars originally purchased in Cali that meet Cali's anti-smog and emissions requirements. If it was built in San Jose, chances are it's a 50 State car. I hope this helps.  :happy_bday: ;D :D

Here in Az we just go and run it thru emissions and roll the dice...lol   If the car is insured as a classic it doesnt have to be tested...but i'm sure in Cali that doesnt apply. We get 1 free retest if it fails. Don't know what to say other than take it down and test it. Sounds like you picked up one sweet ride!!

I have a 78!

Welcome aboard!

Well, I can't find any identifier on mine as far as 49 or 50 states. Mine does have a calatytic converter, thermactor air injection, fuel vapor recovery and EGR setup. It was originally sold in NM as 'high altitude' above 4,000 ft. At sea level my car would run rich.

It's been a while since I had to do a smog test...
