Title: 2.0 crank sproket removal help!
Post by: 73pinto on October 12, 2004, 06:32:51 PM
I''ve got  a 71 2.0 that has 30,000 miles on it and has set for 30 years.  Since it wasn't froze up and barely looks broken in (can still see cross-hatch in the cylinders) I'm attempting to put new gaskets and seals all the way around it.  However, I've hit a road-block.  I can't get the friggin crank sprocket off to remove the front cover.

I've tried all sorts of pullers and have soaked it in PB blast, but nothing has worked.  I'm leary of  using a propane torch on it because the front cover is either plastic or very light aluminum, both of which will melt with a torch.

Can anyone give me any tips or tricks to getting this thing off?

These either just slip off or are pricks to get off the last one did I was rebuilding the motor so I removed the crank with the alloy plate and timing cog still attached and used a press to remove it once I broke the bond it came off easy its just getting that initial movement to take place. A little bit of heat should not hurt the alloy plate you dont want to heat it up till its red hot or any thing a little bit of heat may expand the timing cog enough that it will release its grip it has on the crank allowing you to leaver it forward.
Good luck.

Well, the torch didn't work either.  We're gonna try to drill a couple of holes in it and tap them so we can use a wheel-puller.  As far as I know a 2.3 sprocket will also fit and typical of my luck, that one just slid off like butter at the junk yard. ::)

so on to round 4!

If all else fails use a BFH and smack it.  :o

Well we tried the wheel puller tonight and it didn't budge.  Tried using it with the torch and wound up pulling out the threads that we tapped.

turbo, we're gonna skip past the BFH (which is close to my favorite tool) and take it to my fathers shop so we can use smokey the big blue wrench.   We should be able to cut it down enough to break it without screwing the crank snout up.
