The fuel filter on my 74 will no longer tighten up. It screws in but is wobbly and leaks, even with teflon tape on it. I'm assuming that fitting is a 1/8" pipe thread fitting. Do they make a helicoil for something like that? Ive got a 2.3 non-turbo EFI i''d like to install but i dont have the wiring, computer or fuel pump yet plus i'd like to put in a T5 at the same time as i swap the engine. The 3.55 gears are a killer without an overdrive....
Anyways I digress. What can I do about this filter problem? There isnt any room to drill out the hole and re-tap it. The walls around the fuel inlet are very thin. I need this car for a while longer before the swap but hate to go through another carburetor...
I would try J-B Weld on threads. Fred :)
I hate to do that. What happens if the gasoline attacks the JB weld? Or what happens if i sqeeze some into the inlet of the carb? That cuts off the fuel flow. Also since the filter threads into the carb inlet, once that filter is clogged, i will be Scr*wed unless i can break the JB weld apart by using a wrench on the filter. The best solution i've come up with so far is finding a pipe thread heli-coil. But i'm not sure if they make that even. idk.
and if you were not careful and carb clogged you would be in same boat your in now buy a carb. I have never heard of a heli-coil in pipe thread. You may be able to go straight thread with gasket on fitting. Fred :)
Ok. Will the top of a 79 carb work on the base of my 74 carb? It has some electronics on it but as far as i know they arent required. That might get me by until i find another 74 carb.
I have a ton of parts carbs. email me a pic of yours and I will see if I can match a top for you.
I sent you an email with pictures, tigger. I had to "borrow" the top off of my 76 (which isnt being driven right now) to put on the 74. It apparently caught fire in the last day or two but didnt do much. Just put a black spot on the carb where it was leaking and put soot marks on the filter. Also burned a spot one plug wire. Anyways, I still need a new carb top tho so I can have the 76 back.
What do I do about a vacuum leak at the throttle shaft bore? This thing has never run right since I've had it and I realized today when spraying carb cleaner around the base of the carb that it made a big change in idle. I knew it had a problem but I wasn't sure what. However when I placed my hand over the top of the carburetor and it didn't stall out I knew there was a big vacuum leak somewhere.
The throttle shaft will wobble up and down in the bore a little bit, not a whole lot but a little, more than i think it should and that's where I was spraying when the idle speed changed. I checked the carb on my 76 and it was not as bad but it still wobbled some too. It's been having the same troubles that this 74 has been having (jerking on acceleration, and other problems that lean-running causes. So I think I have two carburetors to repair (this is why I want to go to 2.3 EFI engines, to get rid of the carbs)
Ive heard of this problem on GM quadrajets but never on a ford carb. Is there a bushing kit i can get for this and is it a fix i can do myself or do =es a machine shop need to do it?
