Title: need information on installing a 351w with efi in 78 Pinto
Post by: 828Pinto on July 10, 2009, 08:28:01 AM
I'm looking for some help to install a 351w with a EFI system in a 1978 Pinto sadan. I removed all of the wiring and switches and the computor from the donor. The donor was a 1992 Ford F-250 pick-up that had been wrecked. I bought the whole truck for $300.00 a friend of mine runs a salvage yard and moved the truck for the leftover scrap.I have talked to some other people and they tell me that to install the EFI system that i will have to have the car Dyano tune after the engine is installed. Was planning to leave thew motor stock at this time,But may install a bigger cam at a later date.I'm looking for what I will need to hook-up on the computor and the engine for it to run. Any help will be thankful

The 351W is a bit wider and not as easy to swap as a 302, but still do-able. Since you have the harness and PCM from the donor all you need to do is supply the power and ground circuits. I might be able to find a connector pin-out for you if you need it. Also you will need an electric fuel pump for the EFI and and the inertia switch for safety. You don't need a "dyno tune"!

the intake on the truck is very tall if i remember right.  you may want to hunt down an early lighning intake...which is just a gt40 intake for a 351.  im pretty sure its lower and looks a hell of a lot nicer.  but more importantly...flows better.
in 92, the pickups had the frame mounted high pressure pump still right???  if so id imagine you could use that. if you grabbed it that is.  if not, walbro sells a good inline pump for pretty cheap.
i have an extra inertia switch if you want.

A connector pin out would be a great help. I put all the wiring and the switches in a tote when they were remove from the truck. I need to put out the tote and make sure that i have the inertia switch. Did not get the fuel Pump the guy said it was bad.I will have to set down and see what is in that wiring that can be removed and what i need to keep. thanks for your help
