Title: Ford 8 Inch question
Post by: Pangra74 on July 01, 2009, 09:32:48 PM
Do any of you guys know if the stock drum backing plates from a stock 6 3/4 rear will bolt to an 8 inch rear from a Maverick? I'm looking at an 8" housing on ebay. Would also like to get 4 lug axles if possible.

Joe

My experience going from a 6-3/4" Pinto to "small bearing" 8" Maverick axle, the plates don't swap.

FYI, The pinto is a 4lug 4 1/4" pattern. Same as Mustang 4 lug, also Fairmont and some birds. The Maverick was a 4 lug 4 1/2" pattern.

Are you sure CB? My 8" came from a '68 mustang but the 4 lug axles came from a Maverick and my Pinto wheels bolted right up. I never knew there were so many different 8" set-ups...
And no, the 6-3/4 stuff won't work.

I'm 99.7% sure Mavs were 4 1/2" 4 lugs.

The early ones were 4.5" four lugs. Either the later ones or the V8 ones had five lugs.

I ended up having those 4.5" flanges re-drilled as 4.25" on my Maverick swap axle.

I just want to add that the drums from the 6-3/4" Pinto rear will not fit the (Pinto/Mustang II) 8" rear, even if they have the correct bolt pattern. The center holes are different sizes. Ask me how I know?

Joe, your better off finding a 8" from a V6/ Pinto/Bobcat or V6-V8 Mustang 2, it is a bolt in with no mods, make sure you get the U-bolts and lower shock mounts with the 8".

Yes do that, Harder to find but waaaay less work. If you have an earlier pinto then dont get excited and grab the later model leaf springs also. They are longer and have a different axle mounting position farther back. Makes the wheels sit "weird" in the back. I tried that and that was a bunch of work that i had to undo to go back to stock 71 leaves. You can however stiffen up eariler leaf springs by grabbing a couple of leaves out of the later springs and then adding them to the earlier springs.
But YOU MUST grab the leaf mounting "plates" that locate the axle on the leaves. The locating pad has an oval hole in it to mate to the oval plate locator . The early ones are round.
Sorry just ran away with the subject at hand into a different place LOL! I do that.

??? So did I just get lucky or what? ??? My 8" came from a '68 Mustang. Bolted in, no mods. I took spring perches and u bolts as well, they are different as 71HRP stated. I traded the 5 lug axles and drums for a complete 8" with 4 lugs that the guy said came from a 6 cyl Maverick. No idea what year. Slid the axles in, drums on, Pinto 13" wheels on and away I went. Now I read on here (and different posts about 8" swaps) that there are bunches of different 8" configurations!  :surprised:
