Title: Fender speed nuts - where to buy?
Post by: popbumper on June 23, 2009, 12:37:20 PM
Hi all:

After taking off my drivers' side fender, I also removed the speed nuts (that hold the fender bolts to the unibody) and put them in phosphoric acid to clean them up. Sadly, I left them in there for a few days - which destroyed them (a lot of the metal was literally eaten away).  ???

Lesson learned. Question - where do I get these as new? Home Depot? Automotive supply store? Some other recommendation? Please let me know, thanks!

Are you talking about the C-type clip-on nuts?  If so, NAPA sells them in bags.  Other stores have them in the HELP bolt section but are much more expensive...

I ~might~ have some spares if you can shoot me a picture of what they should look like and a bolt size.
Are they attached to the fender or the unibody?
If they stay on the fender, those fenders I pulled may have them still on.  Of course they are baking up in the attic right now...  :o

C-clip? I guess you could call them that - they go on the unibody. They are shaped like a long "U" with a threaded "nut" as part of one side. It's what receives the bolts that hold the fenders in place. I did find some larger ones (for the bumpers) at a local harware outlet, but they did not have the smaller 1/4" ones I need.

....always do a google search....

These would literally be called "EXTRUDED U-NUTS", I found them out on the web. Now to find a local source, thanks guys.

I know what you mean now - U-clip is a better term - yes, try Napa.  They have them in different sizes and I think even a variety pack!  A bag of 10-12 runs about 4-5 bucks or so.  They had the 3/8 size I needed for the Olds fenders and I know they had smaller sizes.

Kragen and AutoZone also sell them.

The miscellaneous fastener section of a bigger hardware store. Also possibly in someplace like TSC or Bomgaars.

Dallas Mustang should have something similar.

Something similar indeed - I visited them today and bought a VALANCE attachment kit - $12 - which contained 10 u-nuts and 10 black oxidized bolts. They are a little smaller than what I was looking for, BUT, they will work. Thanks for the lead.
