I was in a junkyard over the weekend and was looking for a trac lok 8" out of a mustang II but couldn't get underneath the car to look what ratio or if they were trac lok or not so I looked on teh door 2 see what the codes were and I found one that said 3 and one said 4. Anyone happen to know what they would be? Any help would be appreciated! Oh and one was a 78 and one was a 77 if I remember correctly. Thanks!
Both the 77 and 78 Ford manuals indicate that the "3" axle code is for a 2.79 ratio while the "4" code means a 3.18 ratio. If I am reading the chart right, neither came with a locking differential.
Thank you sir! I figured they wouldn't be any good but it was worth a shot! :(
Both give great information. Be careful though. All ratios are not available for either the 6-3/4" or the 8". If it is the 8" your after I believe (but recommend you check) 3.00, 3.40 and 3.55 are the available ratios. Tom

I checked that site out but it doesnt give the codes off the door sticker that I saw. I'm after a trac loc. I have an 8" 3.55 gear but looking for a trac loc that I can regear to 4.11. I'll probably just end up buying an aftermarket limited slip. Thanks
Go to:

Under the applicable year select "axle."
There is listed a number (Open) or letter (Trac Lok, Limited Slip type) designator for the ratio that is found on the door tag.
