:hypno: I had my 8" axles welded and redrilled for 5 by 4.5 and forgot the the drums. So I took my drums in to be drilled and turned. The drums miked out to thin to be turned, so arises the problem. Is there any 5 hole drum that I can buy new or do I have to buy a new 4 hole and have it redrilled like I did the axles?
the early mustang and mavrick should be what you need
CB Mine came from a maverick. But my 65 mustang has a 8" 5 lug they should fit also
They aren't going to be too wide??
I will measure the width on the 65 tonight when i get home and let you know tomorrow. I will get all the measurements. If you want i can let you borrow one to check fit and you can send it back.
sorry CB thought i did this earlier must have hit the wrong button. the shoe surface is 2" the inside diam. is 10" the depth from inside against axle seat to the inside edge is 3.25"
mine are 9" dia. and 1 3/4" wide.
maybe I should go to a disc setup?
Couldn't hurt to go 4 wheel disk. They would give you better stopping than rear drums.

Before you spend the $$$ for a rear disc setup...
Disc brakes are much heavier than drums.
Disc brakes only have the advantage in the wet or when hot
and the drums you are comparing have not been vented (as below). Many BIG trucks still use drums for a reason. More brake pad surface area than discs.
Changing the brake bias to the back without upgrading the fronts means swapping ends in a sudden stop. Bad Bad Bad :accident:
To balance the brake bias back to correct using a portioning valve only defeats the advantage of the "better stopping power" for the discs in the rear anyway...but you still get the WOW value looking through the wheels...$$$

Quoted for truth. I did a fill and drill on my 8" too, and Ranger drums slipped on perfectly. I think I used 95 as the example year for the parts guys.
I feel much better now, Ranger 9" drums. Thanks so much guys.
Got my drums and today tried them out. Uh, oh, They didn't fit. *%&$#@#@%$&^
The axles were drilled wrong. They measure 4 1/4" not the Ford 4 1/2" pattern. I will make them refund the money or give me new axles. I am a little mad!

I did find an 8" rear guru, and the info for a simple axle swap. Some of you already know this but for the newbies, here is what he said.
The axles to use is from the V8 cars: 65-66 Mustang, 57-59 Ford 9" and 63-65 Fairlane. Just swap the axle flange from the 5 bolt axle to the flange from the 4 bolt axle. No cutting, milling but recommend new bearings and seals.
I bought a pair of 65-66 Mustang axles wanting to do the 5 lug conversion on my 4 bolt Pinto 8 inch. It's not quite that simple. You have to use the Pinto bearings and flanges. That requires the Mustang axles to be milled a bit where the bearing fits. Also one of the Mustang axles is a bit too long and must be cut.The other side is a bit too short but will work. Too much trouble for me. I will get my 4 bolt axles redrilled. There are posts on this site that give more details about what I just said.
Guess I will just have to find another set of 8" Pinto/Mustang ll axles and have them done as before but by another company. Why me Lord???
I'm sure it wasn't personal,It was just your turn ;D
