Title: help on kickdown
Post by: 80bobcat on June 04, 2009, 10:35:27 AM
Hi all.. got the turbo in and running..but now I`m wondering how people have modded the kickdown on the c4? if I remember correctly the original rod worked in the north/south direction and the turbo intake works in the east/west...right now its not hooked up at all and seems to shift ok..but I know I`ll have to address this sooner or later(not a daily driver yet!) will any damage result by not using it?..the guy who rebuilt it said he beefed it up to handle 6 cylinder HP.. whatever that means..anyways any thoughts, ideas, and solutions are welcome.......tia

I'm guessing a cable or bellcrank. The cable may be easier to cobble from factory or aftermarket parts.

Hi all... just an update and another Q... after some digging I got a part # for a kickdown cable for the `87 Tbird SC auto... E7SZ-7A187-A
Anybody know if they had a C4 tranny in those? or if that cable can be adapted to fit a C4 ? tia

They didn't have c4's, they had AODE's. You should be able to fab up a bracket to hook up to your c4. It won't hurt anything to run w/o it, you will just have to manualy downshift from 3rd to 2nd when you nail it!!  ;D

Ahhhhhh...... the info I really needed...... I was led to believe that without that kickdown that damage would result to the tranny..but if all I gotta do is manually put into 2nd when I need the extra go...well...I can live with that!!......thanks 71pintoracer and all the rest    :)

Well I went ahead with the kickdown..using the cable as mentioned.. again I must say I don`t know if its really needed but everything works just a bit better.. shifts are  smoother and having the tranny kickdown on its own is real nice.. I`m thinking that the lever on the tranny controls the fluid through the passages..etc making for better drivability?
I had help..lots of it
first off..the end on the throttle didn`t match so we took it off and replaced it with one from another accelerator cable I had trashed but stashed.. then the lever itself had to be put in upsidedown.. so now the pin was on the wrong side.. but with a cut and weld and some elbow we managed to get it to clear the tranny tunnel..all was clear...now a bracket fabbed and bolted to the bell to hold the cable in place and after some finessing and such we were done.
My job was to keep the beer cold..
Thanks for everyones input..it was well worth the trouble to add this cable

the bottom connection and a L bracket fabbed to hold it to the throttle plate
