Title: Rear axle gear lube questions
Post by: russosborne on May 31, 2009, 12:25:40 AM
Boy I must look like an idiot. I forgot to mention the year and rear end. 1979 with the 6.75 rear.

Ok, yet another area that the Hayne's manual lets me down.

While under the car fixing the gas leak, I noticed fluid/grease all over the botton of the rear axle housing. It is either the rear cover gasket or the front pinion seal or whatever that is called. Of the two, I can redo the gasket so that is what I will do. But, where and how do I add the gear fluid? Also, what weight should I use? This is not a traction lok type rearend. The Hayne's manual just states Hypoid. Well, that is a big help.  :(

Again, this is just further prove that I am going to have to spend the money on a factory service manual. Did Chilton's ever do a Pinto manual? I always had good luck with them in the past.

Thanks,
Russ

You can use 90 weight gear oil found at any auto supply house. There is a screw in plug on the rear that is removed to put in the gear oil. Yes, Chilton did a manual specifically for the 71 thru 80 Pinto. It is more of an owners type service/repair manual, but it covers quite a bit. You can sometimes find them for sale on ebay.

Thanks. 90 weight was my first choice, but you never know.

I think the plug accepts a 3/8" ratchet extension and is usually well concealed with accumulated grime.

NEVER tell a jiffy lube place  :reek: to check and top off your rear.  I made that mistake.  When they were done, asked them what they put in it - they said "ATF - all the new cars use it!"
:reek:  :reek:
I was about ready to flog the guy.  However, I used it as a cleaner, drove it a short time, then replaced it along with the gasket.  After 25 years, it was ready for a lube change!
My axle is very slowly seeping through where the axle tubes meet the pumpkin...

I used the standard 80/90 hypoid gear lube to fill.
Fill it up, then wait an hour or so for the oil to spread out to the axle tubes, then top off.  I learned this through experience.  You cannot dump it in fast like engine oil, since the top of the fill plug is the limit...   :surprised:
