Is there a set of 5 lug Ford axles (not custom made) that would interchange with the 4 lug of a Pinto 8"? I think this has been asked before.
CB, my 8" came from a '68 mustang, it had 5lug axles, I might still have them if you need a set. Let me know, I'll look through mt junkyard, no wait, scratch that, "salvage yard" ;D
So, if I used those axles, they wouldn't have to be shortened, they would slide right in?
Yep, same axle. I think the Pinto and 6 cyl mustangs/mavericks were 4 lug, V8's were 5 lug.
You're temping me, 71. I am in the process of selling a few things, so I will have a little extra budget. Would you sell them to this old man? How would you ship something like that?
Please remember the Mustang II V8 had 4 lug as well.
FrankBoss
mavericks were 5 lug as well but my understanding is the axel is shorter
Shorter than a Pinto, WOW!
CB, I looked, couldn't find them, sorry! :( My old faded memory now recalls that I traded the axles for a Maverick rear end with the 4 lug axles. I found the empty 8" housing and it all started coming back to me..... ::) ::)
I don't know about them being shorter, the Mustang rear was a bolt-in and the Maverick axles were the same.
Thanks for lookin'!!!
I bought a 8" rear axle from a maverick a few weeks ago. This weekend I will pull the axles out of both 8" pinto and 8" maverick and measure them. I did a rough measurement of the housing, the spring perches were the same width but the backing to backing plate width was about an inch and a half narrower on the mav rear. I will let everyone know the results this weekend.
may be narrower there but i don't think that is a real important measurement. its face to face on the front of the drums where the wheels bolt on that is most important width after spring perches.. what measurement is that on each?... thanks. roy

that 'face-to-face' on the drums is important. if it isn't near or just what you want or need then it's back to the drawing board or a whole lot of 'adapting'
The old Bronco rear end was short. about 50 inches. they are a popular swap and have the 5 on 5.5 pattern. :read:
ive got a 77 fairmont/granada 9 inch in the rear of mine. it bolted right between the springs. came out of a V-8 car
I never thought about the fairmont having a 9". Good find Orange.
I am trying to remember what it was but one of the set of axles was shorter and the problem was in the spline area. Measure carefully. I am old and trying to remember what it was. if i do i will post it up.
Carolina Boy,
If you are looking for the axles and drums, here is a set on ebay if they don't go too high in price, you might get a deal. I think a new set was in the $375.00 range, so if you get them for less than $250 with shipping, you made out good. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/5-Lug-Rear-Axles-for-8-Inch-Pinto-and-Mustang-II_W0QQitemZ180366426345QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item29fead40e9&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1171%7C240%3A1318

i had both '78 & '80 Fairmont wagons that were purchased new. They both had the real small v8 (255) and neither had a 9" axle under the rear.
the '80 had the motor replaced with a 5.0 mustang GT motor after the 255 lost a rod on a run from mammoth (california) to the Los Angeles area. (previously had made the run in just under 3 hrs)
car ran like a r@ped ape after that!

yes mustang 2 (Mustang II) stuff .. if you use a fox body rear end you will have to cut of the brackets and weld leaf spring perches on the rear end.. plus im not sure on driveshaft yokes. my fox body has a flat flange on the pinion.. id go for a mustang II 8" out of a v8 Mustang II.... good luck with your awap.. roy
