Title: Engine died and leaking oil, Help
Post by: nroberts119 on May 21, 2009, 03:51:36 PM
I just bought a rail buggy with a 1974 2.0L in it.  Yesterday, the engine died going about 30 mph and when I pulled it over the engine was leaking fluid (I think oil) and wouldn't start.  The engine has been dying lately when in idle and has been backfiring when I shut it off.  Also, there is a rocking, kind of chirping sound that has been happening when I turn left.  Any help in diagnosing the problem or problems would be greatly appreciated.

will the engine turn over? If it just turns and won't fire, your timing belt could be broken.

I would check the timing belt and see if it Jumped or Broke. sounds like its out of time. 2.0's I guess are finiky from what ive read..

The timing belt on my 78 2.3 once jumped a tooth and the engine just died.  It was my fault as I had used a cheapo belt on its first replacement and then went way past the change interval. Ironically it occured on 2-29-2000...
Can you tell where the oil is leaking from?  Up high or down low?
