Title: 5 Lug Conversion
Post by: boggs77wgn on May 19, 2009, 11:43:57 PM
Just curious to know what it takes to convert my 77 wagon to 5 lug front and rear?

For the front, go to Speedway Motors. Rotors are $29.99 each plus shipping (direct replacement). The rear is a little harder. You can redrill the axles, use a five lug rear end from a Granda, Maverick or 67-69 Mustang(may have to move the perches inboard) cars.

you can also use the 1990's mustang rear end but you do have to weld in the perches to match your own Leafs. I still need to get to a welder for that. it is a little wider tho, bout 1/2 in i think.and if you use the 1995 GT or SVT rear and it has the disc brake set up

What about just replacing the axles.  Can you just remove the 4 lug axle and replace it with a 5 lug axle and keep the same rear end?

I asked that a while back and if I remember right, you can use the axles for said Mav, Granada, Mustang, but you have to mill off a 1/2" or so on the spline end. Of course you could order a new axle any length you want.
A machine shop here is doing my axles (weld holes and redrill) for $175.

You can get new axles from Moserengineering.com they will press the new bearings for you if you purchase them together, also they can supply new retainer plates and bolts.  All you have to do is measure each axle from the face of the hub to the end of the axle.  Then you can use Ford Ranger 5 lug drums.  Those you can buy form summit, etc. or get them out of a yard. You can use your old shoes, I chose to replace the whole thing with new. New spring kit the whole thing.  new shocks, new leaf springs. Custom shackles I made myself, I also installed an 8" detroit locker from summit with a 3.25 pinion gear set up. Price is really what will limit your options, I spent about $1,600.00 rebuilding the entire rear end.  Still alot cheaper then tearing it out and installing a 9" with all the same parts, and she still has her original housing.  good luck.

Just went to Speedway motors, they are actually $54.99 each. That is for tjhe rotors only, not any of the other hardware to do a full swapout/upgrade.

Actually they are $29.99 each here is the link
http://www.speedwaymotors.com/5-Bolt-Mustang-II-Rotors,1964.html

I have four, they all came slightly warped and will need to be cut.  It appears to be a storage or manufacturing issue.  These are the five on 4-1/2 ford pattern.

This is the link for new bearings and seals, they run 13.99 for the set.  http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Bearing-Seal-Kit-for-Two-Mustang-II-Rotors,13271.html

Good luck

Rearended,
That's the one, forgot about always changing the bearing and seal. You don't have to change the caliper (a rebuild wouldn't hurt)just install new pads and your new 5 lug wheels and off you go.
My memory isn't the greatest, as you know, but it was one of you nuts that turned me on to Speedway, a million thanks.

Will these fit my 71? I was looking at Jegs website and the application was 74 and newer.
Thanks

Won't fit Randy, '71-'73 are different suspension altogether than'74 & up.
