Title: Where's the buzzer?
Post by: SageNip on October 02, 2004, 09:15:45 AM
Hey, when I first bought my wagon it was in really bad shape.  The interior light wouldnt go on until I put a new door switch in it.  The light works perfectly (I had a hell of a time finding a dome lens).   My prob is that the buzzer doesnt sound, so I'm figuring that its bad.  I want to replace it (maybe with one from a Lincoln that goes "BING     BING     BING").  Where the hell is it!?!  I have looked through every manual and text I have and it doesn't seem to exist.  The only topic close to it is the old seat switch ignition override that the Federal goverment insisted on putting on cars.  Any help?...

Oh, and while I'm here I am also getting an occasional hesitation followed by a rare (but loud) exhaust backfire.  I put high test in it, changed the oil, filter and air filter (getting around to the fuel filter) but I still get the occasional hesitation.  It usually occurs a few miles after an initial start up.  ANy suggestions?

My trusty Haynes manual says that the buzzer is mounted about mid dash behind the pad. Just remember that it doesn't show it in the late model diagrams.

In my experience stumbles & backfires are timing related. In your case though it may be the "accelerator pump" on the carb. if it does it worst when you jump on the gas it may be leaning out. to check pull the top of the breather, look down the throat of the carb(prop open the choke if it's closed) work the throttle linkage open quicly & look for a small stream of gas if you don't see it squirt, or it's just a trickle, you need an accelerator pump. Sounds expensive huh? well actually it's kinda like a squirt gun so it's not too bad. best of luck SageNip

I'll have to keep this in mind on my car... It's doing just this.

Well, it's not the accelerator pump, I get a nice stream of gas from the throttle every time, plus I have already checked that.  I put a new fuel filter in, not that I needed it, because after I installed it, I checked to see the connection and the carb rocked a bit.  Seems that the mounting nuts (the 12 point kind) were loose!  So, I tightened them all up and things seem fine.  I hope it's not the timing, I recently had to put a new auxilliary shaft in because the dumbass who had the car before me messed it up BAD!!  The pin for the keyway wore a nice sized hole in the gear and it would jump timing constantly.  So, hopefully the wagon will be okay.  I havent had time to take it out on a long test drive but as soon as I will I'll post whats up.

Pinto's have a habit of spark knocking & run on (not dying after you kill the switch) if the Timing's off. If it's not doing this, chances are that you've fixed it with tightning the carb. I run premium fuel in my car so that I can keep the timing "up" for power, but if $$ gets short & I put regular in it..... EWWWWW I don't wanna go there!! Let's just say that she REALLY doesn't like it LOL

I want to say the buzzer on my 79 is on the back side of the fuse box with the other relays?

Just replaced the coil and wire from a '82 Mustang and now the wagon is running like brand f-ing new!  Just wanted to drop the line to anyone with similar problems and say try it out.

Thanks,
Sage
