since i put my rear disc brake conversion in my pinto i've been trying to figure out why the car does not stop good.--the rear end is out of a 66 mustang that had drum brakes.--i remember asking jeg's when i purchased the kit if i needed to upgrade my pinto master cylinder and they told me no.--i recently bought a "SSBC" brake pressure guage.--going by the instructions if you have converted from rear drum to disc that the pressure needs to be betweem 1100 psi and 1400 psi.--i only checked the rears over the weekend and they were only registering about 600 psi.--i know that i probably need to upgrade my master cylinder, but i do not know what will fit and also what will work to increase my brake pressure.--i do have play in my brake pedal also.--almost 2 inches of play--possibly needs the pushrod adjusted close to booster to take up the pedal play.--PLZ. I NEED HELP GETTING IT TO WORK PROPERLY.--THANK YOU....
Sorry BP but i am now brake expert but seems to me that a disc brake rear would need a new master cylinder. I dont think the small rear reservoir on the pinto would be enough to operate them properly, like i said though i just dont know but i am sure one of these fart smellers i mean smart fellers on here can help.
you will need a new master cylinder, the one for the pinto is too small to operate the rear disc's. I would suggest the one from a tbirb but i dont know if it will work, Try jegs.

(sniff) that was good. No I'm not a fart smeller.I'm not a feller either but the smart is debatable. lol. ??? ;)
Alright. would it make sense to put the early Mustang master cylinder since the rear is from said 'Stang? As if I know what I'm talking about... ??? :lost: :amazed:
I agree, you need a much larger reservoir to handle the discs.
Chris
Not trying to be a know-it-all but it is not so much the reservoir size as it is the bore size of the M/C. That is where the brake pressure comes from. Unfortunately this is going to be one of those seek and find deals. Take your M/C to a parts store where you know someone that works there (and will help you out) and have them look up anything with rear disc and do a compare-o. Other than that, maybe a junkyard.
I would start by looking at Lincoln Versaille for your master cylinder. Fronts were basically standard Ford, rear, of course, was disc.
BTW, what do you have on the front? 11" right? Remember, the fronts do the majority of the work.
If you're still running stock Pinto, suggest Chassis Engineering kit AU-2045 http://www.chassisengineeringinc.com/page79.html (http://www.chassisengineeringinc.com/page79.html) Granada rotors & '80's Ford calipers.

If by chance it turns out NOT to be the MBC, check your proportioning valve. There is a "screw" at one end of it which adjusts pressure to the rear brakes, allowing them to grab just slightly before the front ones do. I have been doing some reading on proportioning valves and how it regulates pressure to the front brakes in unison with the rear brakes is quite interesting, to me at least.

Dave, would you mind sharing the basics on what you have leared about this some time? I have always wondered what went on inside that thing, other than the light switch breaking, making me unplug the connector to turn the dash light off... :look: Yes, car stops fine, I just need to replace the valve some year... :nocool:
No excuses, Rob, since I gave you that extra valve..... ;D

I plan to change it when the master cylinder needs replacement, as brake bleeding sux. :reek:
Of course that may be in 5-10 years from now... :hypno:
I concur that it sucks. I have bled my system at least three times now; of course, since EVERYTHING has been replaced except the actual brake lines, I don't think I will need to do it again....
....until I upgrade to Power brakes.....
Chris
8)need a new master cylinder. grab one from an svo mustang, or a late model mustang with four wheel discs.
