Title: 1990 Mustang 2.3 EFI Non Turbo
Post by: pintoguy76 on May 02, 2009, 01:28:27 AM
I bought a 1990 2.3 EFI id like to put in my pinto. I have part of the wiring harness but it appears that part of it is missing. I dont see a wide connector for the ECM. It doesnt appear to be cut anywhere, but i do see several connectors that have several wires in them, like they might connect to another half of the harness? Is that how it is?

Since the car i plan on putting this in is a 4 speed, id rather have an MT harness. The MT computers are usually better too, or atleast on the 2.3 turbos they are. If anyone has an MT harness and computer for a 1990 mustang 2.3 let me know. Id like to get this thing going. Im sooo tired of carburetors. What kind of fuel pressure do i need for this engine?

BTW this engine has only 112k on it and with the EFI its rated at like 20ft lb more than the stock pinto engine. Should be a nice lil boost in power, especially since the engine in the car i plan to put this in has a burned valve.

Any help appreciated, im excited about this!

i know the turbo 2.3 run 39psi stock.  im not for sure about the na versions, id imagine that 39-43 would be just fine.  pretty much any high pressure efi inline pump would work.  your factory regulator on the fuel rail will take care of the fuel pressure to the injectors.
i never knew the harnesses to be anything other than the injector harness and the main harness.  but im also not too familiar with the stock na harness.  the auto harness should work.  when you get your mt eec, get diagrams for both auto and mt harnesses and make sure they are pinned the same.  if they are different, which i dont think they will be, just move wires to where you need them.  then remove any of the unused wires from the main plug/harness.  or just tuck them away somewhere unseen.
now your carb headaches will go to electrical headaches.  but at least now when you get it finished, youll get better fuel economy, drivabilaty and power.  all out of the stock trim.

How do you re-pin the harness? Would a Molex pin extractor work or is there another technique?

i just use a small pick.  im sure the right tool would work better, but i do not have that tool so i make do with a regular straight or 90 degree pick.
unclip the pin in the connector, pull out the wire towards the back of the connector, then put the wire in whatever open hole you need it in.

The part of the harness that I have has the connector for the transmission, EGR, temp/oil senders, TPS, IAT, Injectors and maybe a couple other little things. It doesnt have the connector for the computer and i cant find the connector for the oxygen sensor. Im assuming what i have is referred to as the injector harness, or in one post that ive read, someone called it the "front" engine harness. I am strongly considering going ahead and swapping in a T5 and putting this in my wagon instead of my 76 (which is a 2dr and 4 speed) since it is a nicer car, but has points which I despise, and is having power problems and has 3.55 gears (really really needs that overdrive)
