Title: early wagon rearend question
Post by: uncleamin on April 30, 2009, 11:21:50 AM
Did all the '73 and earlier Pinto wagons have the 8 inch rears...or was it just the V6 models? I have a '73 wagon with a 2.0 and was just wondering what rear it had. Thanks.

just look at the front center of the rear, it should look like a 9" rear where the center chunk can be removed as a unit.

I'm really new to Pintos, but the V6 didn't come out until 1975, right? I have a '74 wagon, and I sure wish it HAD a 8" diff.

It can. I got mine for $116.  I'm sure others have found them for even less. 12 nuts (14 if you pull the shocks), one brake hose and the parking brake cable.  I did mine without dropping the springs - kids helped.

Pulled mine without dropping the springs as well - it's a reasonably "easy" job - the biggest hassle is the parking brake cables.

I have a 72 Wagon, and my Rear end is some wierd size like a 7.5"? 7.8"?, and so far it has served me for over 200k without any problems, but I'm considering an 8.8 from a Newer Mustang, I would just have to have Leaf Perches welded on to make it work.
