Daughter came by the other day and said her 2.3 was making a loud squeal when you start it up. Well as you all might know it's the 2.3 I installed after she killed the 2.8. Well anyway it ended up being the belt. It was loose and looked like it was rubbing as I saw some belt rubber here and there. My question, the brackets I got look to be out of say a late 70's 2.3, and I'm only running 1 belt with p/s and alt. Do I need 2 belts? I found this picture on another forum of similar brackets but with 2 belts. The alternator I'm using is a stock 74 Mustang II V6 unit along with the original power steering pump. Anyone have the dual pulley units to fit those items?

Picture no worky :( I had a 78 Pinto with power steering & took the second belt off because it ate a hole through the radiator hose. It worked just fine so I would say no you do not need two belts. The belt rubber you are seeing is more than likely from it being too loose, which I believe you stated it was. I say throw on a new belt, make sure it's tight enough to twist about 90 degrees around. Any more and it will probably squeal & wear out. Any less and it will probably break from being too tight.
I had a 1986 Olds Calais that had a similar problem of the belt dust & squealing.. The belt was loose & I had to frequently retighten it. My alternator kept coming loose so I got a lock washer to keep the bolt from backing out. Yours might be doing that same thing.
