Title: Pintos in movies
Post by: turbopinto72 on September 28, 2004, 11:00:45 AM
I know we have all ( probably) seen Pintos in movies, comercials, and TV shows. I have started looking in the background of shows and movies I have seen before just to locate a Pinto. Yesterday, while watching Back to the Future, I saw a Yellow late model Pinto In the scene just after Michael J Fox and his Girlfriend are sittling on a park bench, with the clock tower in the back ground, talking about "going up to the lake". There are Famous scenes like the Blues Brothers Red wagon flying off a bridge and who can forget " Kujo" the man eating St. Bernard, trying to eat the people in the Yellow Pinto. The scene in the movie "Almost Famous" where Michael and Penny lane are driving to the riot house is shot looking through the windshield of a 72 Pinto.

Escape from New York & Escape from L.A. are Full of 2 or 3 pinto shells. also in at least i scene in Terminator 3 there is a pinto shell. It seems that Pinto's are easy to use a set dressing. In most 70's-early 80's there are Pintos in most city scenes.

There was an episode of Nash Bridges a few years ago where they were doing some Private investigating and the client was a major sports star. His przed but somewhat rough Pinto was stolen. This big star wanted the car back because he said he had it when he had no money. I can't remember the year of Pinto but it was definitely aa major part of the show. ???

The story on A&E or the History channel about the "Hillside Strangler" in LA clearly shows a Pinto in the background when the bad guy is arested at his auto shop.

There is one in Miracles just after the coach goes to the camp, he walks out of the building and it drives off behind them.   There is also the one in Starsky and Hutch after they get teamed up they walk out of the building and there is one driving on the street.  Those are recent movies that I have seen one in.

Taxi Driver- one drives through the light when Robert DeNiro is out with the blond in the coffee shop
Crocodile Dundee- There's a red hatchback parked on the street somewhere when Paul Hogan's running to the subway.
Those are the two that come to mind that haven't already been mentioned.

If I remember right, Pinto was referred to in a bit by Jeff Foxworthy or Bill Engval. They're talking about how someone has just won the huge lottery jackpot and the pot has gone back down to $14 million.

A guy walks in and say's, "Oh, it's back down to $14 million, I guess I won't buy any tickets this week."

And the commedian goes, "Yeah, like $14 million isn't going to make a dent in you Pinto payment."

That is, if I remember right...it's been a couple years.

The red "wagon" that Max drives is actually a Holden. The model escapes me at the moment, but it's a GM, unlike ALL the police cars which are Ford of Australia Falcons (including the "Interceptor")

As for pinto's in songs there's a line in Everclear's song "AM Radio" that goes, I remember back in '72 we were hangin in the neighborhod with nuthin to do, sometimes we'd go drivin around in my sister's Pinto ridin with the windows rolled down, We'd listen to the radio station cuz we were too d#*n poor to buy the 8-track tape

Here's some others have seen:
-"The Betsy" and it had a Red Pinto Hatchback it was being used as a testbed for a engine.
-"Cujo" with it's yellow 77' runabout.
-"Final Destination 2" has a real nice cream colored 79 or 80 , that they smashed to bits unfortunatly.
-"Silence Of The Lambs" has Charice driving a beat up grey 74 or 75 Pinto.
-"Friday" with Ice Cube shows a black Pinto "convertible"!
-"Red Dawn" breifly shows a yellow wagon from the rear ( also gets smashed).
-"Top Secret" shows an early pinto getting gently "tapped" from behind before exploding.
-the first Blues Blues Brothers movie.Henry Gibson was driven around in a real beauty and it came to a sad end in the movie
-"The Spirit of 76". this was an indie film done in the early 90s that starred David Cassidy and was basically a spoof of the 70s. Anyway, a poor little early blue sedan gets blown up.
-straight talk was on and the first six minutes of it is dolly pardon driving a 79 or 80 odd shade of orange trunk model pinto.
-'JoJo Dancer, You're Life is Calling' - A brown Pinto wagon (~74-79) is following the subject vehicle along the winding road.
-the original Terminator. At the end of the movie as Linda Hamilton is pulling in to the gas station in Mexico, there is a 75 or so Pinto sitting beside the gas station.

The original Charlie's Angels drove a red Pinto.
There is always a Pinto or 2 in the old Columbo movies.
there was a movie staring Leslie Neilson when at the end of the movie some thing just touches the rear bumper and the car explodes.
and the tv show Emergency when the fire truck pulls out of the station a Pinto slows down to let it by

Ah yes Pintos on the big screen I saw a BEAUTIFUL light golden/creamy collord 1980 pinto in Final Destination 2....but unfortunately it was completely destroyed in an explosion (what a suprise lol) when Nora Carpenter in the film (Canadian actress Lynda Boyd) lost controll of her Runabout while attempting to dodge HUGE logs falling at a VERY fast velocity when a LARGE truck lost all its load a few vehicles ahead of her pinto. The fast falling dangerous automobile killers of of coarse didn't spare Nora or her son Tim in their old hatchback sliding n skiding all over a VERY VERY slick & wet highway (to make situation even worse) Finally missing all the log truck had to offer( meaning the falling logs/moving logs) Nora tried to stop her Pinto which was speeding at least 65mph probably about 80mph? down the death highway but couldn't do to an obstruck break peddle (Tim's watterbottle managed to roll over onto his mother's side of the car during all the skiding and sliding seconds before) and prevented the break peddle from taking any kind of effect to save him and his mom's life  hence their fiery death when they had a HORRIBLE frontal collision with one of the bigger logs that fell from the truck that was sitting motionless in the far right lane which was there ticket to safety & remote survival then Nora realized what was going on with the peddle and just screamed as they hit the log going at my guess probably 75 mph which then exploded into flames upon impact.

There's several good shots of Pintos in Cheech and Chongs Next Movie. If I remember correctly, theres a blue 77 or 78 peeling out from cheech's house when the girl he's trying to get with gets mad at him because didn't answer the door when she showed up for a date with him.. just so happens he passed out..

I was watching an episode of matlock today about a used car lot owner that ran over the spokesman for the lot across the street and they moved the preceedings into the dead guys lot... Anyways what car was sitting in the back? None other than a 1980 Ford Pinto. The show was taped in about 1992 so that was kinda nice to see a Pinto in that good of condition in that show.

Here are a few more movies where Pintos show up...

Being There
Uptown Saturday Night
Smokey & the Bandit
The Mack
Capricorn One
Let's Do it Again
...and Justice for All
The Glove

"The Glove" is notable becasue no less than *six* different Pintos are shown (along with 2 Gremlins).
As if that wasn't enough, the first Pinto is torn apart by Rosie Grier with his hands...

I actually collect dvd's the I see Pinto's in. :D Other than the many mentioned, a few more off the top of my head are a few seen in "The Falcon and the Snowman", a sighting in the old classic Ron Howard movie "Eat my Dust", but one of my favorites has to be in the original "Dawn of the Dead" it shows a nice closeup of a  bunch of zombies having a feast on top of a 74 -75 Pinto.

It is also seen in a scene shortly after showing the rear of the wagon. I believe it may have been a '76. Unfortunately, I didn't get the title of the episode.

I just put a movie in the DVD player I hadn't seen in twenty years - Fast Company. It was filmed mostly in my home town of Edmonton Alberta. There are several pinto sighting in that movie with one bad V-8 monster on the drag strip.

Worth watching again - boy has this city changed in twenty five years but a few land marks are still the same.

Hello all,

I can definitely relate to the Pinto sightings in Movies and TV shows.  I do it all the time.  Last night I was watching Rumble in the Bronx (Jackie Chan).
There is a Red 74 that first appears at the scene where Jackie Chan just narrowly escapes a falling truck loaded with plastic balls.  Later in the movie the same car is seen again getting whacked by another car after a large air Hydrofoil type boat blast through the streets taking out a bunch of cars in it's way.  I also remember an early episode of Married with Children where there was a brown pinto sedan.  Al was doing some repairs on it for his wife Peg.

You know, I saw a yellow Pinto hatchback in either the movie "Speed" (starring Keanu Reeves) or "Dragnet" (80's movie starring Dan Akroyd and Tom Hanks) -- I didn't write it down, and I can't remember which movie I saw it in (saw both videos this weekend).

It was seen in passing, in a highway scene.

Just got back from seeing "The Man" starring Samuel L Jackson and the funny white guy. Sam Jacksons character commandeers a Pinto in the movie. I turned to my fiance' and said " I hope they don't wreck it." She said " Your going to cry, aren't you?" I'm not going to tell you guys what happened, you'll have to see it for yourself. I can't beleive none of you have mentioned the best Pinto movie scene to date.

In the movie Used Cars the salesman is pounding a customer bare-assed in the hatchback of a runabout.

Classic  ;D

Also in Married With Children they were trying to make a point with the cars the Bundys had.

They were all classified as loser cars.  Gremlin, Duster, and the beloved Pinto.  Too bad they chose to stick with the Duster instead of the Pinto.  Maybe nobody would beleive that Al would have so many problems with a Pinto.  Wishful thinking.

In the Friday night episode (October 14th-Brad's birthday-how appropriate!!) of "Ghost Whisperer", one of the main characters drove a '74-'76 orange sedan. Never did see the front, so not sure of the exact year, but it did have the '76 and earlier taillights. The character was made out to be a loser, so I guess they thought the Pinto fit the mold!!  :-\

"Damnation Alley" from the mid "70s has a couple of Pintos scattered about.  Most notably, a Wagon sitting on the street just after they blow their way out of the parking garage in the "Landmaster"!

I can't believe this one isn;t here.

In "Speed", as the bus is careening onto a crowded offramp, it sidelines all the cars in the left lane.  Unfortunately, a 79 or 80 white Pinto Wagon gets destroyed and is shot from a couple different angles so you see all the wreckage.

Just went out and got Rob Zombie's sequel The Devil's Rejects, and I give it 2 thumbs up. A great movie, non stop action, and if you look close, I believe there is a Pinto runabout sitting in the tall grass by the house where the totally freaked out Firefly family live. The movie is based in 1976, alot of cool Dodge cars in it, also ;D

I like in "SPEED" when Sandra talks about driving the bus and states that it is "like driving a really big pinto."

In the 007 movie, "Diamonds are Forever" (1971), there is a pinto parked behind Bond, right after the other agents loose the woman they were following at the funhouse.

I found a more obscure one.  The movie "Surf Nazis Must Die" has a dark green runabout (don't know the year) toward the end of the film.  A couple of guys are getting ready for surfing just outside of their Pinto when two Nazis run up and steal their boards.

You see what happens when you have a friend who owns a video store.  You are invited to view films that are only worth viewing to see the Pinto at the end.

I hope this isn't a repost- H.B. Halicki wrote, starred, produced and directed the original "Gone in 60 Seconds" in the early to mid 70's. there was a '71 - '73 pinto sitting in his shop where he did his "switch-overs"

Ran into a spoof these guys made about "The fast & the furious". Pretty awful, but about 3/4 of the way in it looks like they are unveiling their "Secret Weapon".

I belive it was in "the Betsy" that a super-fast racing test motor was trying to be hid from some top exec's that I think wanted to take the credit for it or something, so to test it without being noticed they put it in a red 71? pinto trunk-model, and they ran it, and there was a chase scene( in which the pinto won) and it was pretty neat. But that was the most interesting part of the movie, the rest of it was a bunch of flashbacks and stuff, it didn't really have a plot, and the ending really sucked :o :) ;)  :D ;D

There was a show on MTV called The Seventies House. They used MY actual pinto for the show, when it aired, as they were driving it, they edited in awful noises that the car has never made. which pissed me off royal!! also there is one in the newly released movie "Crash." two guys are arguing and get into a car, which if you know pintos, you'll recognize it.  While they are arguing, the driver is trying to start it, then he yells, "Man what did you do to my car?!?!"

During a chase where a Dodge van was chasing Spenser and Hawk in a parking structure, the van runs into a Pinto Squire wagon ('74-'78, couldn't see enough to see what year). Then the person in the van gets out of the van to go to look out over the wall to watch Spenser getting away, there is a '79/'80 sedan/hatchback in the background. I just got a dvd off the cheap rack at Target entitled "Top Secret!" made by Paramount in 1984.  The comedy has a plot but they insert gags at every possible opportunity (like the Airplane movie).  One of the gags shows a truck skidding to a stop behind a parked Pinto. To instill fear, they zoom in on the Pinto script logo on the trunk.  The truck ends up barely tapping the Pinto's bumper and the Pinto immediately bursts in to flames taking the truck with it.  The Pinto was a big bumper one.
