Post by: dcorry on April 21, 2009, 10:51:19 PM
Need help in changing this old duraspark amplifier box and distributor out to a TFI distributor on my pinto wagon with a 2.3 motor.Any help would be appreciated so i don't short out the TFI ,or spend all day on running back and forth to the junk yard chasing down wiring. Can't be that much to it and i'm sure somebody on here has experience in changing them out .......Daniel

Ummm, the TFI will only work on a race car because the advance is controlled by the PCM. When it is installed on a car w/o a computer the advance is stationary. I ran one on my dirt track car and would have to get the engine cranking over before flipping the ignition toggle so it would start.
Just wondering, why do you want to get rid of the duraspark?

Good point! While it is only going half way, is the vacuum part of the old to new adaptable?  There is that metal rod that holds the PIP stationary?  Will the vacuum canister mount there?

That aside, (given its limitation) 71PintoRacer is correct the TFI needs a computer (and all the other input sensors) to set the timing dynamically when the engine is running.
