Hey all, I know I'm gonna get ribbed for this, but I want to put the emissions euqipment back on my 78 Runabout.
When I bought the car all the emissions were gone, and I want them back.. does anyone have a diagram, or picture of the engine compartment that can hep me redo the emissions system on my car?
I'm trying to restore it completely, and that means putting the smog equipment back on.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I'm not sure what all pieces you'd need, but finding an unmolested pinto or mustangII 4cyl may be your best bet. In my experience there isn't a ton of stuff to replace, but it's a pain to get right. That's why most of the Pinto's have had the smog equipmet pulled.
Yeah, you're probably right... would the bracket and smog pump be the same off an early model ranger? If it is, I can atleast get that part now, and bolt it on the car, even though it wouldn't be hooked up... If I have to I'll do a little bit at a time until it's done.
To get it right I think I'd get all my parts first. Then one I got 'em all I'd star installing them.
As for the ranger smog pump I think I'd research to see if your car had one to start with. Check with some of the guys here with low mileage cars. They'll know what pieces you need to get
I can email you a pic of my '79 if you want. It is all original and 100% with no smog pump.
That would help me out alot..
Also, how can I tell if my car had a smog pump to begin with? It has had the engine replaced by the previous owner.
The intake manifold has an EGR valve, and the air cleaner has the door on the hard plastic piece before the hose.
I think it had the smog pump, but any info of the car with and without will help.
Well if Totljeep's Pinto doesn't have a smog pump then most likely yours didn't either. His is newer, therefore more likely to have one. If this is the case (and I'm pretty sure it is) then only Calif. cars would have smog pumps. I know my '80 didn't have one either, nor did my '76 'StangII 4cyl. My '74 Pinto didn't even have a catalytic converter when it was new!!
yeah, you're right, but what's confusing t me on whether mine had a smog pump, is that the exhaust manifold has the fittings in it that would connect to the smog pump.
The engine is a 1979 2.3 as I found out on the label on the valve cover, but I don't know if the old owner used the intake and exhaust manifolds that came off the car, or the ones that were on the engine that he dropped in the car.
All I want to do is get the emissions system back into the right shape, so the car runs right when I do replace my engine.
Getting all the emissions right will be a real challenge Matt. That's why most Pintos have them stripped off.
I hear ya on that.... I know on my 1985 Dodge Omni GLH all the vacuum lines and emissions were screwed up bigtime, and I got that all fixed up ok.
I figure if I can fix the emissions on an 85 Multiport injection turbo car I can get a N/A carbeurator car fixed up right... It'll take some time, but I've got that. :)
every Pinto model I have owned had a smog pump. There was a metal line coming off the exhaust manifold that went to the air diverter and then to the pump itself.
