Title: 87 T/C coupe wiring in a 71
Post by: fast64ranchero on April 06, 2009, 03:18:44 PM
I'm new in here and would like to say thanks right off the bat, I've read lots of stuff in here and did not find the answer for my question, here's what I have 1971 Pinto Coupe, 2000cc auto car, I'm installing a 87 T/C motor, Do I need to run the Boost Control Soleniod (let the waste gate do its job) and the Knock Sensor, or can I remove one or both of those? I found a simplified wiring diagram on http://www.blindchickenracing.com/How_to/T-bird_install/t-birdwiring.jpg     and have been pooring over it and the stock diagram, I would like to end up with a correct running car without a Check engine light on. I'm starting off with a mess of wires, this motor has already been transplanted into an 84 Ranger, So I now have th T/C harnes, and the Rangers, along with the LA2 ecu and another smaller box that is labeled CB,

also what is the deal with using offset dowel pins to use a C-4 bell from a 2000cc engine on a 2.3L?
Thanks for the help

hello, you can leave the knock sensor unplugged but if you have detonation it can save the motor. many have said to keep the stock boost control selenoid plugged into the harness but bypass the vaccuum connections. thats how i ran mine. others say you dont need it either. the dowel pins on the later 2.3 are a different size than the ones of the 2.0 thus the need for ofset dowel pins. they can be had for cheap. 25 bucks i think.

Yep, you use the stepped dowel pins to use the 2.0 C4 on the 2.3L.
Bill, 77turbopinto, set me up with a supplier for OEM quality stepped dowel pins.

A LOT cheaper than your average 2.3L C4 bell.
Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks for the help, it looks like I'll only have 20 or so wires to hook up, and a few others to leave in the loom just incase I add a fan or whatever, so anyone have any ideas what the other smaller computor is? it's labeled CB

Hi, welcome to the Pinto side of life.  I did a '88 T/C motor, T-5 into a '73 wagon.  While highly advised not to, I used the T/C harness.  It is a LOT of work.  I had to decipher out the ride control, anti lock brakes and every luxury "do-dad" the car had.  The car runs and all that, but I still have about 15-20 wires I'm unsure about.

I wanted the cruise control and the interval wipers.  Thus I transplanted the T/C steering column too.

I just looked through my box of "extra" wires, but did not find anything labeled "CB." I'm just guessing, but if you have an Automatic could it be for the transmission?  The only other computers I'm aware of are the anti lock and the ride control.

If you could post a picture (click on additional options) it might help. Otherwise if you could describe it that too might help.

The 87 TC that I disassembled had a small box labelled CB mounted on the passenger side inner fender by the engine.  It was the "integrated controller module" or essentially a fancy relay box.  It controls power to the: main computer, fuel pump, A/C clutch solenoid, and both cooling fans.

To make life easier, I would strongly suggest you get a "Electrical & Vacuum Trouble-shooting Manual" for the 87 Turbocoupe.  There is one on ebay at the moment, try searching on: 1987, Ford, (EVTM*,electrical & vacuum*)

How hard was it to install the TC steering column?
