Title: Where does one obtain dropped spindles?
Post by: popbumper on April 05, 2009, 07:34:59 PM
Hi all:

In anticipation of doing my front end rebuild, I have to ask - where does one obtain dropped spindles? I have read at least a few threads where folks mention them (I believe a 2" drop), but I do not know where to buy. Please advise, thanks!

here are the ones i have on my car.  they fit great but i have a problem with the factory brake hose.  its not the fault of the spindle though.  ive also included pics of where my brake hose problem was.

Excellent, thanks! That's a decent price, I think I need to get all my front end parts ordered this week.

i think a mustang 2 is the same so the parts are interchangeable.

here you go chris.  i got the brake line on mine taken care of and i got pics! it set me back about $55 from scummit.  i also had to do a little "messaging" to the brake caliper brackets to have them fit as they should.  nothing major, just a little grinding to take a little bit off where it is next to the spindle. i dont have the receipt in front of me but ill break down the parts without the part numbers.  2 18 inch -3AN Earls brake hoses with a swivel 90 degree on one end and straight on the other, 2 aeroquip (or whoever for that matter) 3/16 24 female to -3AN male for where the factory steel brake line meets the hose, 2 Russel (or whoever again) 7/16 24 male to -3AN male for the new hose to go into the factory caliper, and finally of course new crush washers.  the added bonus is that they look great!  although no one will ever really see them.

Sweet! Thanks for the info a great recap with photos!! That is very helpful, esp. with part numbers and all.  ;D

I had a good day myself, my front end is officially removed from my car. A buddy of mine who has an older 70's comet came by about 11:30 and we wrapped up the dirty greasy effort 6 hours later. We still have to sawzall the lower control arms off - those bolts will NOT budge!!  ???

It was an education - for sure - and it was great to pull all those rusty parts. Off to the sandblaster this week, and then it's a POR-15 party. Soon I'll have new front brakes, tie rod ends, calipers, spindles, bellows, bushings, ball joints, and everything will be spanking clean/repainted!!  ;)

Woohoo, I love working on these cars - except for the MASSIVE rust hole I have which encompasses a good part of the passenger side inner fender - photos and more to tell later.

so last night i finally finished everything with the brakes and suspension.  i put the tires back on the car and...what is this?  my front tires dont turn.  i made a horrible mistake of not testing fitment with the tie rod ends hooked up.  and yes, they hit.  i didnt even take the ends into consideration when i was mocking up, i was just worried about the lower ball joint.  thats also with 13 inch rims.  so i went around the whole car and "un-pimped" my ride and set it back to stock height.  the arms for the tie rod end will need to be heated and bent to fit with my little rims.  i do not want to go through the hastle of making them work now so they are on my shelf.  wether i use them on the pinto when i get my drag radial or they get put on one of the street rods, i guess time will tell.

Turbo74pinto,
I would not heat the spindles to "move" for clearance. There's such a thing as "ackerman" angle in the geometry along with the usual "bump steer". I know this because of a past project I worked on with a Sunbeam Tiger. Better to shop for wheels to clear the tie rod end of the spindle or use wheel spacers with longer studs.
Or just convert to 5 lug and get the 15 inch wheel benefits.

pintosopher, that is what i was planning on if i use them on the car.  the car is so freaking close to driving again i just said f*** it and put it back to stock.  it just pisses me off that that i didnt check fitment with the tie rods on. i can run my 15 inch skinnies without a problem, but i like the "slow" look i get with the 13s for street driving.
