Title: Turbo coupe salvage parts
Post by: jimknightford@yaho on September 23, 2004, 05:08:47 AM
hey guy's,  I was out roaming my local pick-a-part yard and spotted a T-bird Turbo coupe. Except for a missing Intake the motor, auto trans and rear end (minus the the brakes)  are all there. I would like to salvage the the motor and drive line for a future project and have a few questions- #1-what kind of auto trans is in that T-bird? It's an OD unit which would suit my needs but is it strong enough for high performance work?  Can I use the rear end in a 71-73 Pinto?  What size is it 8 inch or what?  I'm thinking if it will fit I could weld some new spring perches on it and bolt it to my leaf springs. (comments).  Besides yanking the computer what all do I need to take to make a transpalant?  Thanks!  Jim Knight '72 2.0 in progress.

Jim, you would not ( or dont want to) use the auto trans in the Tbird. Stick with a C4 and eliminate all kinds of probblems. You need to salvage as much as possible with the engine. Grab all the sensors, wiring etc including the computer. Yes you can use the 6 3/4 rear that is in your pinto but it might break with the added torque of the turbo engine. The rear end in a tbird is an 8.8. Better off going with a 8 inch as it will fit better.

it was incredible to see them (8" vs 6.5") side by side.  The plates looked a little different in location, but when it came to bolting the 8" in, it was a perfect fit.  I used an 8" out of a Mustang 2 and I am running mustang gt turbine wheels from an 88 gt.  Also, the brake lines from the pinto rear end will work on the other rear end with a few minor adjustments.
