ok, i just put my starter back in after pulling the tranny, went to fire her up and got a loud noise (clunk) and the starter wont turn the motor over, then you can do it again it will turn over but it will be real loud and it stops. The motor is free, i drove it to where I parked it to work on it, it didnt make the sounds before, I pulled the starter again and put it back in, it turned over for about 2 secs then it stops... So I pulled the starter again and hooked it right up to a battery and it spins fine. The teeth on the fly wheel are all good. and Im not sure what the starters teeth should look like, It really isnt rounded off and like I said it started fine before. So my question is wow and how much teeth should be on the starter. Also is there a certain way to put the starter back in to ensure it lines up right? It was just a bummer I was all excited to go for a drive tonight!! Thank You
Branden
You pulled the trans to replace a freeze plug?(from another topic) Did you line up the clutch assembly before putting the trans back? Did you torque all your bolts? I am not trying to be funny, clutches can be tempermental.
yes thats me, its an automatic and everything is tight. I spun the fly wheel to get the tc on so nothing is jammed, I marked the fly wheel with a marker so its on the exact why I took it off.
Branden make sure starter is mounted flush if so then replace starter. Hey whats the gallery picture you have to the left. Fred :)
Ya it was flush I tried made double sure the last time I put it in. Thank you I have it out and bringing it to town to get replaced, haha the picture is me skipping a creek on a 76 ski doo tnt that I build up, the picture is amazing I wish I could make it bigger..
I thought you might have been a hot skier like me doing a body slide on the water. Fred :)
Branden, I thought you had a manual trans. I agree with Fred, replace the starter.
Fred, Nope just me on a old sled in a creek, Thank You Carolina Boy, I wish it was a stick!! Ok new deal, I brought my starter into the electric shop, they rebuilt alt and starters he did a stress test and all sorts of things, the starter was fine. Now what??? What if I tighted my flywheel to much Ive noticed I have had a habbit of not locking the wrench and turning up the pounds, would that cause any problems?
sward:
Make sure your cables are all clean and tight. Don't overlook any connection. This includes the battery to cables, cables to solonoid (on firewall near battery at other end of positive cable), cables to starter, and the small wires to the solonoid. I had a loose negative connection. Turn on key, everything fine. Turn to start, loud click-no spin-lites on dash went out. Couple minutes later, lights back on, try again, might spin a sec-might do the first thing again.
Also some points of interest:
The condition/age of the battery
The condition/age of the battery terminals
The condition/age of the cables and cable terminals
The condition/age of the solonoid

Chuck, Did yours have a loud sound as well? The noise it made was kinda a unsettling metal on metal clunk then it went to nothing. Thanks!
I'm not sure how it happened but,it sounds as if the trans is not lined up correctly.Your description of the noise would indicate the starter is too close to the flywheel. The first sound you are hearing is the drive hitting the flywheel as it engages instead of just sliding in.It's loud while its cranking because it's being forced against the flywheel no clearance.
BINGO, when I started messing around with it after the new cables and the same problem, I decided to put a socket on the drive pully and see if it moved and low and behold no such luck!! So I pulled the tranny back some and realigned it and it fired right up!! Thank Goodness one mountain climbed and waiting for another. Thanks for all your help
Happy to hear it worked.Hopefully you're next mountain is just a mole hill.
I went for a spin last night!!! and I do believe it will be nothing but little mole hills from here on out Thanks Everyone for your help
Any time! ;)
