Does anyone know if there are differences between the Pintomagic windshield gasket and the Autokrafter gasket? Is Pintomagic still around and does anyone have any contact information? The website www.pintomagic.com doesn't seem to work anymore but I am not sure it ever did. I don't remember how I got their address orginally.
I purchased a Pintomagic gasket several years ago (around $170 IIRC) and am just getting around to having it installed and I am having leaking problems even using two different glass installers. My windshield frame (pinchweld) is rust free with no silicone contaminants. The first guy didn't use any sealer and the second guy used some urethane after the windshield and gasket were installed. The second guy is coming back out this Friday to take care of the leaks - I hope this is the end of it.
Thanks, Mark
Sorry I can't help you on the pintomagic thing, but I did buy my gasket from Autokrafters a couple of months ago! Just intalled it a few weeks ago! First time we put it in we used no sealent, and left the black (what looked like) foam stuff around d the frame! It leaked! Tried to pull the sheild back out to add sealent and broke it!! Bought another sheild and this time used sealent (silicone) all around the inside and outside of the gasket! Put it all back in the car and it leaked worse then it ever had!! I mean it flooded!!!! So for the next attempt, we left it in and ran ureathane around the top and sides, inbetween the cars body and the new gasket!! I know one shouldn't do it that way, but the bead of ureathane is smooth and uniform to allow water run off!! That did the trick!!
So I don't know what I did wrong with the install, but it finally doesn't leak!
Pintogirl,
Sorry to hear about the broken windshield! The foam tape, if original, is called PVC tape - at least according to my Chilton's manual. I'm glad the urethane worked for you. Hope you stay dry. Mine also pours in from the bottom of the windshield and leaks from the top.

You guys are scaring me - my windshield gasket replacement is the NEXT task on my "to-do" list. It doesn't leak now, but I must remove it, as there is a nice hole in the cowl right at the corner of the gasket that needs to be repaired (it lets LOTS of rain in the car). The gasket it also rock hard and crumbly....
Chris
Chris,
I'm not sure what the problem is with the installation but I'm hoping to cure it this Friday. The Chilton's manual calls for PVC tape on the outward facing side of the pinchweld and that's all. But that tells me an installation requires SOME type of sealant beween the gasket and the pinchweld. I'm going to be there when the guy comes back and I'm hoping that he has some method of peeling back the gasket and filling that space - between the gasket and pinchweld - with urethane caulk. I'm also going to have him lift the gasket from the glass itself and fill that with urethane. I know he laid a line of urethane at the edge of the gasket on the top of the window and another where the glass sits in the gasket at the bottom but obviously that was not enough to effectively seal everything. I am still wondering about the gasket itself and how far off from factory specs it might be. There isn't supposed to have to be any caulk between the glass and the gasket and yet mine leaked badly at the base - water ran down the glass and then back up the inside of the glass and over the gasket. It also ran over the pinchweld and then down under the dash. My old, cracked, dry rotted gasket didn't leak at all and all it seemed to have was the original PVC tape! The windshield frame and pinchweld are not damaged and have no rust either.
I'll keep everyone posted and I'm still wondering about the different gaskets' quality.

Dave:
I'm lost here - who are you talking to, and what (pictures) of rust/what body are you referring to? I can't see in this thread where there is anything that pertains to your comments. You also mentioned the figure $150 - referring to what?
Looks like I picked a bad day to give up drinking cough syrup.... :hypno:
Chris
It's not YOUR cough syrup  I think he was trying to respond to this thread: http://www.fordpinto.com/smf/index.php/topic,11822.0.html (http://www.fordpinto.com/smf/index.php/topic,11822.0.html)

Thank you kindly. Back to my normally scheduled NyQuil :P
Chris
Wow, how in the world did THAT happen?! I am very sorry for that!
I have been watching this post though, as I plan to replace my gasket in the near future as well! I really hope the leaking gets figured out on replacement gaskets.
EDIT: Post Removed.
