Post by: earthquake on March 20, 2009, 10:07:45 AM
Does anyone know anything about this part.It has a leatherett textured surface and is made of pot metal.does anyone know what model it was used in.This is only the second one Ive seen in 30 yrs so I assume it's a fairly rare part.

I just sent one to Carolina Boy a couple weeks ago. I found it in the back of a 77 wagon. I have a plastic textured one in my car, and another textured plastic one that had a am/fm radio (no tape) from sears that was in a 78 bobcat wagon. I have a smooth plastic one that 78squirewagon sent me, not sure what year its from. The older pintos I had (72-75) all had smooth potmetal radio plates. The 78 brochure shows a smooth plate that matches the dash, the textured ones I've seen have all been black. I've seen many variations over the years, and since they're interchangeable because the opening is the same no matter the year, exact years of use are kind of hard to pin down. I think the plate may have been available as an aftermarket part as well, because I can't find a ford stamp or part # on the one from the bobcat, and the one in my car is shaped differently.

The radio delete car in my year had a plastic glove box insert in that hole, earlier models used a smooth metal plate, resembling a glove box door, but was fixed in place with screws.

Hope that answers the question or at least inspires thought!
Once again, a master of seemingly useless trivia ;D

Doc, I had one that came with a 79 HB I bought a few years back.  I wondered the same thing but I did not see a Ford p/n on it.  I assumed it was an aftermarket bezel ???

Don't know if this helps but....i have a 1980 Wagon i bought from the original owner over 12 years ago. It has the Black textured metal bezel. And i know it is stock and original. However the sales booklet shows the bezel as painted the same color as the dash (Orange in my case). Same case with the E-Brake cover. I will check for numbers this weekend. Perhaps towards the end of the Pintos run, Ford grabbed whatever was left in the parts bin???

Textured radio bezel is aftermarket only.
Some new car dealers would order Pintos without radio and then add aftermarket radio with aftermarket bezel (to make more profit), that is why some people think they have an OE factory textured bezel. I know this from working in dealer parts for 40 years.

That makes sense. The only markings on it are MP  73 FDP.We figured it stood for mounting plate 73 ford pinto,Defiantly not a ford part #.
