Title: WaterTemp sending unit location 2.3L-where to add one
Post by: russosborne on March 18, 2009, 12:46:05 AM
I have a manual aftermarket water temp guage I want to put in. problem is I didn't realise it was a manual and not electric. It is part of a 3 gauge set I bought on clearance at half price last year.

I want to keep the stock idiot light working, so where can I put the sending unit for the new gauge? I am open to moving the stock one if that would be easier.

If all else fails, I will use the aftermarket gauge instead of the idiot light, but I really want to have both.

Buying an electric gauge is not an option right now, although I am sure that would be the easiest way to go (except for my wallet) :(

Thanks,
Russ

The only way I could think to do that would be to go to the hardware store and get some fittings to put in the heater hose. That assumes that the coolant flows thru the core all the time and not just when the heater is on. I think it does, unless it has AC. Another option would be to do the same thing in the upper radiator hose. That'd take some big fittings and would be fugly to look at but it would work. The temperature sensor must be in the stream of water for it to work, therefore a tee in the original location wouldnt work.

Thanks.
I was hoping to find another spot in the block. I know with a V8 you can find several spots, guess the 4-banger is different.

Some Audis and fwd Volks (Quantum/Dasher) use a metal coupling with a temp sender in the bottom radiator hose to control the electric fan. If you have a local u-pull-it, it might be worth the walk. My experience was an Audi 100LS (replaced by the 5000).

I put the sending unit,on the right below the intake towards the back of the motor.

Depending on what you have, check around your intake for a number of different places.  I have a carb model and have found a couple of places...

Thanks, I will try to see what there is.
I may just hook up the aftermarket gauge where the stock one goes, and then figure out a place to put the stock sending unit. I am hoping to get the dash back together this weekend, I just need to finish up the radio bezel mods for the gauges and change out the instrument panel light bulbs and I should be set. Need to start driving it again soon, been driving the wife's old Trailblazer, but it is about to be history.
