Title: Another tach question
Post by: Carolina Boy on March 13, 2009, 03:36:31 PM
Is there a place to get the wiring diagram and plugs from converting a non tach car to a rally tach car? I just got a tach cluster from one of the guys and want to hook it up. Any help will be appreciated. It is a 77 tach cluster going into a 78 hole.

The Haynes manual won't be any help here, I just looked. There is someone that sells the complete 1978 factory service manual on CD-ROM. That would probably help. I think it was going for $20-$30 last time I looked. If you search "ford pinto" it should come up, if not, near the bottom of the page there's an option to view "buy it now inventory from e-bay stores", it may take a little while, but you'll find it. There are usually 13 pages of Pinto items and about 35-40 pages of 'buy it now' inventory, hope that helps.

I have found that the Ford "electrical & vacuum trouble shooting manual" (EVTM) has very handy wiring diagrams.  The vacuum section is not as through.  I got mine from ebay, search on: 197*, Pinto, (EVTM*,electrical & vacuum*).

I do not know of a source for Pinto electrical connectors.  Maybe some body here will have what you need.  You could always rewire for currently available universal plugs, one of many sources: http://www.fordfuelinjection.com/index.php?p=21 (http://www.fordfuelinjection.com/index.php?p=21)

Are you looking for the little 4-prong plug for the back of the tach??

I've got one (with 3" long wire stubs) that the locking tab just broke off of  >:( but it fits very snuggly into the back of the tach.  You can have it for shipping.  If that suits, PM me an address.

Mike

P.S.  I can also provide the wiring info.

Yep, got it.

I'm going to the P.O. in the morning with some eBay sales, so it'll be in the mail then.

Your plug went out this morning.  Slow mail  ;D  Don't worry about the shipping: it'll be my Good Turn of the Month

Wiring (from 1977 EVTM): (the plug is from a 4-cylinder car)

red w/light green stripe --> "hot when ignition switch in run"
dark green w/yellow dots --> ignition coil
black --> ground ("behind center of instrument panel")

6-cylinder cars apparently used the fourth lug as a ground (gray w/black dots) "grounded on voltage regulator"

I just installed a SunPro on my Pinto and the neg side of the coil will have TACH on the plastic. Just a heads up. And that wire is green w/ yellow?? Mine was so dirty it just looked really dark green  ::) I guess you will have that every now and then, but I had the general idea of how to install after building so many race cars and other cars with tachs. Good luck with the install!
