Title: Adding sport mirrors a couple of questions
Post by: russosborne on March 07, 2009, 11:07:16 PM
Hi all.

I am finally getting around to installing a pair of sport mirrors to my 79 Hatchback. It came with only one non remote mirror. These are off of another Pinto, I am not sure what year.

1st question-does the passenger side mirror get mounted to the door in the same relative position as the driver's side? Same distance from front edge, etc? I will have to drill a fairly big hole for the remote cable and I don't want to make a mistake.

2nd question-I was hoping that the drivers side door panel would have a place to show where the remote handle(lever, whatever :-) ) should go, but there is nothing. Where on the door does it go?

3rd question-where on the dash does the remote handle go for the passenger side mirror?

Thanks,
Russ

I installed sport mirrors to my 73 a couple years back.  I made a template off a factory sport mirror car to locate the knob hole on the drivers side.  As for the passengers side, the early cars did not have remote pass side mirrors so I did not have to deal with the cable.  The molding on the top of the doors are different.  There is a notch for the mirror similar to the drivers side.  I changed the molding and then located the mirror, spaced the same distance away as the drivers side was and then I marked the holes.  I purchased the screw inserts from Mustangs Unlimited.  Now I would either use the gasket or the drivers door to locate the hole for the cable.  I assume the holes are already in the doors to run the cables into the car.  The remote knob comes out under the dash, on the drivers side of the jockey box.  I hope this helps you some.

Thanks.
Jockey box??? That's one I haven't heard before. :-)
I don't know anyone who has a Pinto. Maybe I can find some pictures online.
I didn't think about the molding on the door. Can't afford to replace that, so I imagine I will have to mount the passenger mirror a little lower than it should be. I will have to take a look at it. The door itself is pretty much rusted out, so I am not worried about ruining it. I just don't want to make any more leaks. :D
Could you tell me roughly where you put the knob on the drivers door? Like above the window crank, or ...? Or did you mean the driver's side remote knob when refering to the Jockey box?
Thanks,
Russ

I refer to the console piece under the radio as the jockey box.  To the left of it is where the knob goes for the pass side mirror.  I took some pics from my crusing wagon.  The knob on the drivers door looks like it is directly above the window crank.  Make sure when you make the hole that it is flat on one side in order to keep the knob from spinning in the hole.  I don't remember which side is the flat side of the hole but you should be able to figure it out as you will want up to move the glass up and down to move the glass down when the knob is installed.  Hopefully that makes sense to you.  Good luck.

Thanks ALOT for the pictures. That made it clear even to me. :-)
And thanks for the heads up about the flat spot. I would have completely forgotten about that otherwise.
Funny thing is I was thinking about putting the driver's side knob where you have it, but I was wanting to find out the proper location first. :-)

When I installed the RH remote mirror on my 77 wagon the hole for the control knob was already in the dash.
