about five or six years ago i started looking for a pinto wagon. so in 2007 i was working out of town and off in the distance out in a field i saw a set of wagon tail lights. when i went and asked the rancher if he wanted to sell the pinto he said OK, you can have it for forty dollars. even before i went to look at it i gave him the money. then i went to look at the pinto. it was half barred in the mud and to my surprise it was a 1978 ford pinto cruising wagon. the car was pretty complete. it needed a radiator and some serious cleaning. after going to get friend to help me pull it out of the mud the rancher told me that the car had sat there for at least fifteen years. he didn't have a title, but for forty dollars it was a steal. after towing it home and it sitting in the garage for about a year and a half i got it started. then i looked on ebay for a radiator and found one for fifty dollars. my understanding wife said since the car runs you can spend some more money on it. i spent about two hundred dollars on getting the title for it. i then drained the fuel tank, changed the oil, gave it a tune up and took it over to the local muffler shop to get a new exhaust. went to the junk yard to look for fenders and after arguing with the local salvage yard for about a month he finally agreed that he did have a pinto he would trade me for parts for an old truck that i had. then it was time to get tires.
I'm still on the look out for a deal like this. Would love to have a wagon, alone another Pinto! Things are looking better for me though, getting out of debt, promotion at work, car stopped leaking around the windshield...for now. Maybe something will come along my way! :D
I love little stories like this. :D
You are soooo lucky, those cruising wagons were so nice, and I hope to buy one some day. I like to hear stories of a Pinto being rescued and revitalized. Good work, I'm glad you noticed it. It makes me sad to think there are Pintos out there just sitting and deteriorating, when there's homes that would love and appreciate them . Anyway, have fun with the wagon, it'll be a nice topic of conversation around town.
