Title: shifter
Post by: Carolina Boy on March 01, 2009, 02:00:20 PM
I was looking at some pictures of the 4speed shifter and started wondering, what is that below the shift, just under the boot, something for vibration?
I read a little more after doing a search and found the post about the Conversion with Mustangll. How do you remove the main shaft?

The white plastic below the boot? Those are the "friction plates" (for lack of better words). They slide against each other when moving the shifter around.

The main shaft? Do you mean the shaft that the knob screws to? It has to be twisted off. Inside the wide part of the top shaft, is a rubber bushing, and inside that is a steel sleeve. The sleeve is pressed onto the bottom shaft which holds it VERY tightly together. I used a set of vice grips around the top shaft close to the wide part, and twisted SLOWLY until the turned. Then I just kept turning clockwise until it "unscrewed" off.

Yea, the wide thing at the bottom of the "topshaft". Twist off, huh, great! The tapered Part of th e bottom shaft looks like it could be treaded with a die. Now I know what I'm thinking about doing. ;D
I will tread that shaft to accept a treaded 4" cold rolled tube, then tread that on the outside for my Hurst tee handle. Short throw Pinto shifter is born. What do yall think??
