Title: Headliner Question
Post by: rancheroo on February 18, 2009, 08:47:54 PM
I have to weld some metal into the roof of my 74, right along the rain gutter.  I'd like to detach the headliner in the passenger side door opening & slide a metal plate in there so I don't burn up my headliner.  How do I detach the liner, just along the side so I don't destroy it while welding?

Good luck, the channel that holds the headliner above the door is barbed. And usually after age the original material is very fragile.

might want to look for this stuff called labmetal, its actual metal in a can. you apply it like bondo and it can be shaped with regular body tools. works very nice. my local welding supply store carries it.

Thanks fellas.  Cammer, I have a quart of metal to metak filler, but I want to cut out the rust & weld in new metal as I have 5 holes big enough for my thumb.  Putting filler on it won't stop the rust.  It may slow it down, but I don't want to go through the trouble of doing the bodywork & painting the car to have bubbles appear in the paint at a later date.

I guess I'll go real slow & try to be extra careful so I don't burn holes in the liner.  Tonight I welded up the five holes on the passenger side C-pillar that hah vinyl top trim clips in them.  Went to put my metal to metal filler on top of the ground down welds...& my brand new can is as hard as a rock...I'll exchange it.  no holes yet...
