Title: Hood scoops
Post by: entropy on February 18, 2009, 12:11:41 PM
Here's an idea I'm toying with and I'm wondering if anybody's seen it done before.  My very first car was a 1972 Maverick Grabber with a 302.  As anybody who knows those cars will tell you, the coolest thing about them (well...aside from the huge sleeper factor) was that hood.  I would like to incorporate that scoop design into the hood of my Pinto...as a nod to my first hotrod.  Does anybody know if this has been done by anybody?  I'm fairly certain I wouldn't want to cut up an original steel Grabber hood to steal the scoops, so fiberglass is going to be the way to go.  If anybody has ever seen a purpose-built Pinto hood with the scoops, I'd love the hear about it, but I suspect it's going to be a matter of finding a 'glass Maverick hood and cutting it up.  Any thoughts?

I have not seen these scoops added to the Pinto.  Below are a couple links to fiberglass Maverick grabber hoods.  Seems a bit expensive and some of these companies do not have best reputation (do not know which ones).  If you could find a rusted out one in the junk yard or there may be a Maverick user group like this one which may help.

I really have never tried to incorporate a scoop into any of the vehicles I've ever had, but I would assume there are a lot of scoops in junk yards, that could be used on the Pinto.  For instance, I would think a hood scoop from a mid 70's model Mustang (Cobra II, Mach I, or fastback model) would work.  There's probably some of those in auto graveyards, with damage to the front (from collisions or the elements), making the hood unusable.  The scoop could have survived the crash, or natures elements.  Anyway, not knowing what I'm doing, if I wanted to put a scoop on mine, I would have started with going to a salvage yard, and looking for other vehicles which had them, and see if they could be modified to fit my Pinto.  Good Luck.

I thought I would reply.  Has nothing to do with grabber scoops or where you can get them.  Although I agree that would be a great look.  I used scoops from 69 chevelle and turned them around so the cowl induction is facing forward, turned out good.
Fiberglass hoods are always kind of ify. As a hottrodder I would not hesitate cutting up a maverick hood (or anything else for that matter) and go for that look.  Like I said it would be cool.
