Title: quickie 8" pinion question
Post by: dholvrsn on February 18, 2009, 12:11:24 PM
Is the tooth on the pinion with the notch ground into it supposed to be the same one with the yellow paint mark? I got hold of one where these are two different teeth. Thanks!

This one is a bit over my experience level. BUT I have in my possession a copy of the FoMoCo rear axle service guide. It has no mention of the yellow paint but states that the pinion tooth with the mark is in "time" when it is in mesh the two marked teeth on the ring gear. Are these gears a ford set or aftermarket? There's a bunch of measurements to be sure!

It's believed to be a genuine Ford 3.25 gear set. Right now the thing is assembled with the yellow painted pinion tooth between the two yellow painted ring gear teeth. When I cranked this all around, the grinder mark never landed between the two yellow ring teeth.

The yellow paint is there from when the rear was originally set up.  It marks the pattern on the teeth to make sure the pattern is in the middle of the teeth not at the rim of the teeth.  If this was apart and put back together you will have to reset the pattern.  Warning though to reset the gears is hard with out getting a whine out of the rearend because it has already woren a pattern in the teeth. You will need to set the backlash, endplay with a dial indicator(I think it is around .012) and pinion depth if this has been apart. Below is a link on 9" gear setup but the 8" is exactly the same.
