Title: My new Pinto, The Sequel
Post by: Carolina Boy on February 17, 2009, 09:09:03 PM
Feb. 17, 2009
After the 80 wagon let down and the change of heart on the 76. The 1978 Hatch restore has started. Started the strip down of the 76 today. I pulled the interior front and back. The hatch was next and it came off soooo easy. I will need new hold up tubes (I don't know what they are called). I pulled out some dash parts that hadn't been trashed. Will need a radio bezel. Tomorrow I plan on getting the wheels (Fairmont 14s) and the rear end, springs and all.
I am also going to pull the front sheet work off and the bumpers, maybe the doors. I don't know how to take the  stationary 1/4 glass out, but will try. After tomorrow I won't be able to play with the cars for about two weeks due to my sugery on Thursday morning. About the first week in March, check the classifieds for parts from my project that I didn't use.

Feb. 18, 2009
Woke up to cold weather and rain, will have to wait to strip till after sugery :(

I have a few radio bezels laying around, they are suitable for different purposes. What kind of radio do you plan to put in it? Factory AM? 8 track? CD? I pull every one I see at the junkyard, and that's one part I've learned to keep on hand (It's my thing!) Let me know, and if I can't match you with one I have, I'll go hunting!

Thanks again for the prayers and support. Just so all will know, it is a cervical fuzion in two places to add to the earlier 3. I will end up with 5 Vertabrae fuzed together (3/4" shorter). The surgery is 9:30am Thursday with two nights in the hospital. I will be typing again Saturday night.

I will take you up on that bezel, Discolives, don't matter about the color and I will be putting in just a stock AM radio. Mine is cut up, do you need it for anything? Just email me with a total$.

Thanks again guy and gals,
Carolina Boy

Send me a pic of the face of your radio and measurement of the square opening your radio will cover. How is your old one cut? for a cd deck? Maybe we can work out a trade.

I feel for you with back problems, my mom broke her hip when she was 12 and developed degenerative arthritis. At one point her back and hips had 3 metal rods. She underwent 6 surgeries before I graduated high school. When I was a kid she would be home in full body casts and other braces and such. She eventually had both hips replaced (one twice, long story).

My Mom, who was a registered nurse all her career broke bones in her lower back in her early 20s. She lived with the pain for as long as she could til she had those affected vertebrae fused. Her only regret was not doing it sooner.

Well I got out if the house today. ;D Had to charge the body's batteries(and I was driving the other half nuts). Buddy and I went and finished the 76 strip. :amazed: She gave up alot of thing  that I have now put up for sell over in classifieds. ;D Sent discolives his rubber baby bumpers. :) Came home and tinkered with the 78. 8) We Flushed the radiator and then changed the plugs, wires, battery, and oil. :) It wouldn't start, nothing, OH NO!! ??? Attached the battery cables and She fired right up. ::) Blew the smoke out and heard a clank in the back ??? Muffler had fallen off, so that's why it was so loud! HMM
We threw Her in to gear and rode up and down the street. WHOOPPIE 8) She drove pretty good.
Went ahead and put Her back in the driveway and let Her rest. That was a lot for my first day so I went and took a nap.

Spent a little time with the old girl today. :D Sanded down the drivers fender nice and smooth and put it in primer. 8) Worked a bit on the hatch, decided to stick with the full glass. :look: Took the spoiler off the 76 hatch. I am going to use it on the 78. ;D Had to do some cutting and fitting. :amazed: I carved out a section to incorporate the handle. I'll have to do a bit of fiberglass magic. ;D
Do have a question though, how do you drill a hole in glass? ??? It is for mounting the spoiler. 8)

I agree..glue it. The auto glass is tempered and will crack if you try to drill it. I went through this with my 69 Mustang that has glue-in windows (factory). I wanted to put some bolts thru the glass to better hold them in the channel but is not possible once the glass is tempered. I could have changed everything $$$ to 1970 Mustang (has the bolted in factory upgrade) but I re-glued mine til' they go again. 71HANTO

Had two setbacks today. Found that the headlight covers (door?) are coming apart. I will have to find some more later. I didn't know they were rubber till I tried to remove them. I wonder if the 76's would work? The fender are the same?
The 76 and the 78 had the same hoods, Right? The 78s hood is so rusted and pitted it needs changing. My buddy's coming over tomorrow to help pull the interior. I hope I don't find any holes.

I'm thinking the light bezels and the hood were similar to the '71-'75 on the '76. The grille and front signal lights were different. The '77-'78 had round headlights but squarish bezels. Hmm... now I'll have to look...

Robert,

In a case like that, I would check with an automotive specialty shop... one who supplies paint, adhesives, etc. to the body shops, and ask their recommendation.
My inexpert opinion is that something like JB Weld or any good epoxy would do the trick.  Depending on the amount of surface contact you have, you may even be able to use automotive-grade double-sided tape.  Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

I want to take this time to thank Mike, Tony, and Phil for the new parts. Also, thanks go out to all the guys and girls for all the help, how to info, and some good laughs while I have been recouperating. I hope to return all the favors by building my car and showing it off to yall. I am here for yall anytime I can help!
Title: Re: My new Pinto, The Sequel, need advice
Post by: Carolina Boy on March 24, 2009, 07:06:35 PM
As you know my car is a 78 hatchback with a 2.3 and 4 speed. The advice I need is, am I going the right way? :-\ I will be driving it daily. Go to shows and want to smoke a Ricer every now and then. I am not looking to build a 1/4 mile, 8 sec car :police: , just a simple fun show off car. 8)

This is what I'm sure about:
rebuilding the engine and DE-smogging.
Boring .030 over
shaving the head, w/ port and polish
I will use long under chassis headers (1-3/4" w/ 2-1/2 collector)
2-1/2" exhaust pipe to the side, in front of rear wheel
Offy 4 barrel manifold with 390 cfm Holley
MSD ignition and distributor
8" rear
14" wheels and tires (215/70/14)

Yalls advice from here?
Which rear gear ratio
Cam duration and lift
Fuzzy dice or cross

Yall know I value your opinions highly. Any help?

Carolina Boy,
The cylinder head and Cam specs should have a common goal, increased flow for the type of powerband and driving style. If you do a bit of research on the heads the D style intake ports are the way to start a good head. Get a roller style cam for Longevity and RPM. Remember the valves have to flow better at Half lift twice in a rotation, and total lift doesn't always make for a drivable engine on the street. Lobe centers are important (108-110 degrees) Duration  288 degrees ,and the exhaust can really mess up the cam efficiency if it's too large.
Gears, 3:50 to 3:70
I'll give up the  floor here..

Pintogirl, Fuzzy dice it is

Pintosopher, This is why I ask questions. I get the lobe center and duration, I'm still at a loss on lift. Summit has a Comp Cam with close number as you suggested. Lobes at 110 degree, duration is advertised at 272 INT&EXH (226 at .050 lift, INT/EXH), 1500-5500 rpm. What do you think of this cam? (STOCK# 70-127-6)
Rear gear is noted.

Do you think I can squeeze at least 150 HP?

First off...I know nothing about 2.3s except the bump stick is on top. But the cam of any engine is the heart and in my opinion,  ALWAYS  the  place to start. Everything gets built out from that...hopefully, all balanced to work together. THE biggest error people make is thinking if big is better, than BIGGEST IS BEST.....WRONG!! :amazed: BALANCE of the combination of parts and porting is the key. Based on your information above, I would focus on a cam profile that emphasizes TORQUE numbers. Torque is what accelerates the car. It is the measurement of the twist force to the drive shaft. The more twist force, the more burnt rubber and burnt ricers ;D Why do some people build 460 low RPM boat anchors?...MASSIVE TORQUE.  Based on your tire choice (you might like 60 series better overall), I would go with the plentiful 3.40 rear gears and obligatory hanging High School (or college) Graduation Tassel ;D

I have decided to name the car Bandit. That is the name of my bestest dog buddy I saved from the pound in 1992. He was my car dog. My 69 Fairlane Torino was named after him. No matter where he was, rattle the car keys and he was there at the door, ready to go. I lost him to pancreatic cancer in 2003 , and sold the car in 2004 :'(. Okay, dry your eyes. I'll talk about the car, sorry Bandit.

Worked on the "Bandit" today. Switched out the hood, head light bezels, removed the front bumper. Sanded down the passenger fender and repaired the rear plastic whatsitcalled panels inside the hatch area. I am having lots of fun with wire wheels, sandpaper and primer.

Out of the blue, I had a guy come by today, said he'd like to buy my engine and trans. :surprised: Said he was a racer. I told him I wasn't interested but he left his number anyways. His offer was $500 or trade for his 1986 Mustang LX 302(V4)/T5 that has been rear ended and totaled. He said the engine runs and the trans is fine. I have had, going to a 302/T5 setup, on the back burner for "Bandit". I wonder if I should check this deal out? That sure would give Bandit more bark and bite!

Rust holes Pulled up the carpet today and found rust holes. They aren't big about 3/8" round is the biggest. I have heard about this POR-15, is it any good? Short of having to cut a floor board, how would yall fix the small holes. The floors are still pretty solid, my wire brush knocked the rust off and I see good metal.
I guess yall can tell I ain't a body man, but I'll try anything once.

Pulled the anti-pollution crap off today and plugged up the holes. The battery tray andfender underneath is rust free. Sanded and primed after removal of the tray.
I have got the front fenders and hood all  the same color of primer after wet sanding for about 4 hours. Hope to start in on the doors tomorrow. They both have the typical rust holes in the bottom corners. May have to break down and get a mig and do some welding, don't like to use a lot of bondo.

If you will check out the thread "Popbumper's '76 wagon" in the Projects folder, you can see how I repaired my floors with POR-15 - and how beautifully they turned out. I >highly< recommend it.

PS - the fiberglass mesh in the floor and trunk repair kit that POR-15 sells is awesome. You saturate it with the POR-15, and once on your floor, the mesh dries rock hard - you can bang on it with your fist and it won't budge. This is the best way to fix small holes besides replacing floor pans.

I was able to mount (adapt) a 2 1/2" exhaust on the Bandit today. Went from the 2" head pipe to a glasspack and out with 2 1/2 ending in a chrome 3" slash cut tip just in front of the rear wheelwell on the driverside. Sounded mellow and mean but not to loud. Got the engine tuned up with the usual, plugs, new wires, oil, and timing. Got to say even though it is bone stock, it runs and sounds good. Next on the plate is finding a performance intake, headers and cam. That my take a little time. Oh well, at lease:

After I snag a hot manifold and headers, I will get the cam.
Worked on Bandit today. Tightened up the new exhaust for now. Will have to modify the exhaust again when I get the header. Finished up the short shifter Mods and installed it. That is short but the throw is about 2 inches. In stalled the reverse spring mod and that tightened up the shifter and has gave it a firm shifting feel. Finished cleaning up the interior and installed the Black seats to drive with. Need to sell both sets before I can buy the Summit high backs. Yes I found more rust in the front floor pan. It is pretty bad. I don't think POR-15 is going to help me there. Hope to install the 8" next week. Freind of mine overhauled it and gave me a 4.11 setup. Drove it around the neigborhood a little today. Started smoking some. It is white smoke so I quess the valve seals are giving up the ghost. But man it is so fun to get on it a tad, go thru the gears then down shift, ber rapp rap!!!! I feeel like I'm 40 again.

White smoke? I would think if it were valve seals it would blow blue smoke. Atleast that is the color smoke my 77 blew when I had bad valve seals. Might want to check into a head gasket. It could be gone or going bad. Cylinder leakdown test is a good place to start.

:tgif: You are right. I got my smoke mixed up. Blue is oil and white is a too rich carb. Mia coopa! Could be way it misses sometimes.
My carb has seen better day and maybe should be rebuilt or replaced. Of course the tubing has been messed with because I de-smogged it. I might have plug some thing or ran the tubing wrong. I can't wait to get another manifold and get a simple carb.
Would you know if putting a stonger coil (75k)would help it fire better?
What did you think of my new shifter. Short huh?

I know blue smoke does. Harold II was a bug killer when I first got her... Putting a stronger coil on her couldn't hurt any. One thing about the 2.3s is they do tend to eat camshafts so if you are having the misfires you might want to pull the valve cover and take a look at the cam.

Found the problem in the head and block, they are cracked. Small cracks around the valve guides. I pulled the head off and looked at the pistons, crusted with carbon. Number two had deep scapes (gouges) so I pulled the pan and found small pieces of ring. I will have to rebuild the engine, but that will have to wait.
Oh well, maybe it's time to start the deconstruction for body work and engine swap. I guess I will be putting in the 302/T5 sooner than I planned. I am going to make a promise to myself, and yall hold me to it, to have Bandit finished and meet yall at Carlisle 2011 for the 40th aniversary.

sorry about the sad news on the 4 banger sounds like you got a boat anchor their. You better pull the heater box and take a gander up at the cowl pan i suspect you have rust that is letting the rain in to the floor pans. You will have to fix that or the floor will leave again. Your time will be better spent on the 5.0 anyways.

SFF, I took the block to the machine shop this morning and they said no. The scares miked at .093". They recommended sleeving. What is yalls take on this solution?? If yes. would you sleeve all four cylinders?? They also said the head was trash, hair cracks everywhere.

It was a lot of fun driving it while I could. Maybe I should just throw my hands up and start a complete ground up resto-mod. I have two years till the 40th aniversary meet in Carlisle.

You know what they say opinions are like butt holes, every bodys got one, so heres mine, opinion that is.
If the 5.0 is your goal then i would get started in that direction. either way is going to be a lot of work and money. It would save you a great deal of both to just get started on the main project and spend the extra money on something that you are going to keep. oh well thats just my butt hole opinion.    :showback:

Carolina Boy Robert (as if there were OTHER Carolina Boys! lol) (Novacain's got to me head! See? There's the Liverpool accent! lol.) Anyway, CB, I think it depends on the final plan you have for Bandit. If you're keeping her stock (this Bandit IS a her, right? I can't check under her tail. ) then maybe a new or rebuilt 2.3 or 2.8 is the way to go. If you're gonna humiliate the ricers and other arrogant jerks then turbo or V8 is the answer. ;D  On Wildfire (a girl car, thank you!) I will keep her stock (though how fun it would be to have an unassuming lil' sleeper? ) Oh, that's right. I already have a sleeper. The Flying Avocado falls asleep at intersections. Maybe a 91 or so 4cyl Ranger engine (certified or low mileage), Roller rockers, big carb, header, and free breathing Exhaust. Minimal mods, motor mounts are bolt up. You're up and running with 145 HP Like NOW! :amazed:
Unless you derive "stimulus" from fab work ;D and welding fumes. :lost:

You guys are killing me with the cowl leaks. I know that my white wagon and red coupe needs to be fixed (like all of the Pinto's in the world) but I am afraid to tackle it LOL!! Cant someone come up with a product like Fix A Flat that we can just pour in the cowl, slosh around and fix the leaks.
Sorry to hijack the thread CB but I had to chime in on the cowl thing  ;D

Um, sorry. I myself was sadly surprised by the cowl leak thing. I told the seller when I went to look at the car, "hey, the drivers' side floor is wet! What's the problem"? "Oh, I left the window opened when it rained". Since I had never heard of a leaking cowl, I took the bait.

The sad truth was learned when I pulled the fender off. Argggh! :cheesy_p:

CW, I wouldn't waste any money on the old engine. You could sleeve the one cylinder, bore the rest, buy new pistons, find a head, have it redone, turn the crank, ect, ect, ect. With parts and machine work you're pushing a grand. It's kind of a decision you need to make, your ultimate goal is the V8, but like pintosopher said, if you could pick up  a decent ranger engine you could be up and running while you work on your V8. On the other hand, that money could be well spent on the V8......oh, what to do, what to do!!

Let us start with Blupinto,
Layoff the wacky weed, put the novacain down! :hypno: Bandit is the name sake, the car is a she!

Everybody's answers are right on track. ;) I do have my truck for parts getten'and work. :look:

Since it wasn't an everyday driver I will just have to do without for a while. I have two years to bring her back to life.
I have decided it is time to start (as Chip would say) deconstuction. I will strip the old girl down, blaster her, repair her wornout body, get her into major coats of zinc primer, lizard skin her bottom, and sound proofing inside. Then it will be paint, glass, suspension, drivetrain, and finish off with a great interior. I see this as a labor of love and a slap to the face of our government. She will live again!!!!!!!!!!!
WARNING: Questions will be asked if I get stuck on something.

CB,
A good foundation is the essence of good Government!  ERR , I meant Street cars and race cars. So Dismantle away, Just remember.. someday a powerplant will occupy that hole underhood.

So Alex, I'll take powerplant indecision for $200....  ;D

With the engine being trashed, I have consintrated on the body. A buddy let me use his welder and I patched up some exterior holes. I tried to set the yard on fire with the sparks from grinding the welds, opps! Puddied the car, sanded down, puddied again, and wet sanded. I then raddle can primered the whole outside. That was a long 8 hrs. I will jump back on it Monday and wet sand again. Next week is going to be interior prepping.
The first of June, the welder buddy is going to help me build a body rotisery. I am also pouring a concrete pad in the back yard. Once it is cured, and portable garage will be erected. It won't be a Hamilton garage but it will keep Bandit dry while she is rebuilt.

Kim  and Becky  yes, me no :embarrassed:. I ain't got a garage. It is only going to be a slab of concrete and a big plastic tent :((found on craigslist). I will have to mix and pour the slab myself :'(. The rotisery will be made of two 1000 lb engine stands(again, found on craigslist ;D) and some extra tubing my freind has . Then there is the rental cherrypicker and floorjack that leaks :nocool:. I am cheap on tools but try for the best for parts for Bandit. I had to do something, have you tried moving an engine laden cherrypicker on gravel?? :nocool:

Nah, haven't tried that.. Might be because I don't have a cherry picker either. To pull the old engine out of my Omni GLH Turbo I had to strip it to the bear block, and just let the old engine fall out of the engine compartment lol.

LOL...

Actually I removed the bolts holding the engine to the transaxle, grabbed an old tire iron I pried the block off the dowels. I let it fall  to the driveway, where I then dragged it out from under the car.  The car was jacked up high enough in the air that I had no problem doing that. The block was junk anyways so I didn't care what happened to it.

How did that run? My dad was a Dodge mechanic for almost 30 years and talked about how he wanted a Dodge with a turbo four-cyl in it like the Omni/Horizon GLH or a Shelby Charger (he had one that he loved.) He wanted to swap it into a Dodge Rampage that was my great grandpas that we inherited from him... but it and that plan is long down the road; its just interesting to hear word of an old Omni Goes Like Hell, created by none other than the Pinto brain himself, Lee Iacocca, who thanks to the dumbasses in the auto industry today, is losing part of his retirement  >:( That really burns my @$$. As far as her coming back, that is no, no chance. She's back in NY for good, case closed. :showback: Free again, free again!! Heck she didn't like Bandit anyways. :nocool: No more marriage for me :drunk:, I'll just be a playboy from now on.(HINT HINT)

I have been stripping the interior between rain storms and job interviews. Plan on taking it down to a rolling shell. I will then have it blasted and repainted then carefully reconstrusted 90% stock with the other 10% being the 302/T5 swap. I will be able to get back to it when I am settled in the new job.

Carolina Boy

Sorry to hear about your other half, though you may not be :)

I was married, too, for 15 years, it was 13 of the happiest years of my life. But I paid my debt to society and reproduced myself, so it wasn't all bad.

I'm located in the Mountains of NC(right on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park). I noticed your moniker, are you in NC or SC?

By the way, this would be a great place to hold a get together, Gatlingburg is just over the mountain, Cherokee is just down the road and there is a scenic train here in Bryson City. Lots of motel space and camping grounds and some of the prettiest scenery on God's green Earth(and great driving roads, too). Y'all come!!!

Good luck on your new job. They're running pretty scarce these days.

Do you(or anyone else) know of any 71-73 or 79-80 wagons for sale(somewhere fairly close)? Does anyone? I've got a couple of nice engines needing a good home and I have always wanted a Pinto Ranchero. Don't really want to start modding my 79, it just wouldn't feel right.

You would, Blu
I have made a difficult decision on the rear end. I aquired another set of axles (machine shop bought them due to their screw up). I stayed with the 4 lug axles and used my 14" Fairmont rims. I resealed and put new bearings in the rearend and installed it. I had 205/70/14 mounted on the front and 215/70/14 on the rear. I painted the rims highgloss black, used chromed nuts and trim ring. Looks pertty sharpe, if I do say so myself.
I just had to do SOME work on Bandit, as I had to relax because of my work hours. Felt good, too! I have been talking to a buddy of mine about a swap, my 5.0/T5 for his 3.8SC/ T5. Just might take him up on it.
Bandit's body is next to get some paint in the next couple of weeks.
I should have some more days off soon and will try to post some new pictures.

There for a moment I thought maybe you'd had too much of that funny lemonade of yours!

Well... I'm jealous now.  If I had a place to get my Pinto indoors, I might actually accomplish something with it.  Had a kid stop by one day last week and wanted to know if I would sell it.  To tell you the truth, I was tempted - the idea being that I could maybe find one that needs less attention, since I'm having trouble finding time to invest in it.  But, it's mechanically sounds and there's really nothing all that bad wrong with it cosmetically, so I said no.  I'm going to see this through to the end, regardless of when that happens to be!

HAPPY LABOR DAY WEEKEND!!! Fire up the BBQ, opps, that's the grill if ya ain't down South! :drunk:
The slab is poured and cured. I had hoped to pit up the shelter back on 24th or 25th. Work has made me put a hold on that. Now this weekend (3 Days) is mine, ALL MINE!
From earlier post, update is, no I didn't trade the 5.0/T5 for the 3.8 SC. Did sell the 5.0 for money to work on truck (must have truck). Lucky enough, a freind told me of a complete 289 w/ manual 3 speed for $50. Of course I went and got it. It came out if a 67 Fairlane, spins freely. Could someone tell me the code of the engine if I post it? After putting up the shelter, I will tear down the 289, dip it, machine (if needed) and rebuild.
Once I get Bandit in the shelter on that hard flat floor, I will start again on deconstruction, all the way to a shell. I am going to blast it inside and out to bare metal.
More updates and pictures soon!  :drunk:

Got some time to work on Bandit. This is the big hole that will have a nice powerful 289 in it. Of course I will clean it up first.

After looking at this last post of mine with that big hole in my Pinto I went ahead and sent the 289 heads off for a good head job. Next week I will get the block bored .030 over and start putting it back together. The engine had a 3 speed manual attached which I want to change to a T5, T10, or toploader.
With the new position, I have more time to spend on Bandit. I hope to have the drivetrain right and driving by early summer. Wish me luck!!

I would need an adapter plate right? Unless I used the 89s bell and flywheel?

CB:

I hope to have a very similar "hole" in my wagon soon, now that it has gone off to a shop space for the Winter. I am thinking 289 also, will be very interested in your progress, please keep us updated as to what parts you use and what successes/fail;ures you encounter.

the flywheel will have to be early model to balance your motor. you can use the 89 bell i purty sure. some of the later model t5 bells were longer but you can change the imput shaft over to the shorter one and use earlier bell. but i think 89 was reg bell. long bell was like 93 i think. i havent reserched them for a while. 85 or 86 is when the switched to world class. so dont go any earlier than that.

Yep. Cabin fever had got to me. I am doing quite well now, thanks to you all and Kelly and John. They will be moving into their new house Jan. 15th so it will just be me and the dogs again, but they are only 2 miles away. John can't wait to get back to work on Bandit with me and we are searching Craigslist for a wagon for them.(yes a Pinto)

72 pair and Blu has my valances. did a little work on Bandit today. stripped the wiring out, rotten and chewed. John helped pull the old 4 speed out, I'm selling it to Babycheezemo.

Went to see that man over in Graham, that Fred told me about, and did some recruiting for the Club. I was able to get  a close up look at his 75 and found that the 75 grill will work on mine without brackets. I will sell my 76 grill and buy a 75 grill.

I hadn't realize I have posted here in a while, so I thought I'd give an update.
Haven't done much. Today I mainly cleaned up things. Been having problems with locating the last parts needed to start full production. I have decided to go 5 lug after all.
Can't move it to easy right now. Need the complete rag joint. When I traded my power rack for a manual rack, He didn't give me the rag joint. I may have found one today. Ya'll know I am going  to use a 74 grille.(Yes it it a Johnny Cash car).
I am having to repour my slab. The #$%& thing cracked all over.
Home is ok!
Job is fine!
New kids all wonderful!
